finaly found an acceptable place for a phone mount. Seems unnecessarily complicated, but, puts the phone behind the windshield and doesn't block my view of any gauges or lights. I miss handle bars. they were so convenient..

I looked at the center triple tree nut mount, but it wouldn't work with the wireless charging mount I wanted to use.

90 miles of blissful smiles in the sun and wind of the North Cackalacky foothills this afternoon.

Before heading out, I replaced the gianormous auditory atrocity that is the Stebel horn with the PIAA slim. Much more concealable and seems perfectly adequate.

Yesterday I stopped putting it off and dove into the long, somewhat complex job of upgrading to tapered roller steering bearings.

I got as far as removing the old bearing races from the frame. Tonight, I'm hoping to get the old inner bearing race off the steering stem shaft. And maybe install the new outer races in the frame.

1 month ago i ordered a seat concepts seat for my gen 1. Yesterday i contacted the seller to check on the progress only to find out they had canceled the order because it was out of production but had not bothered to let me know. Too bad. I really liked the seat concepts seat i had on my dr650. Looking for anther option i decided on a top sellerie. I contacted the manufacturer in France and was able to get a tall, long seat with a firm foam delivered for about $380 including about $120 shipping. $380 is what ebay charges for the generic top sellerie seat.so still a better option Even with the high shipping cost. And potentially a better fit for a 6'7" rider.

Awhile ago a friend pointed out that my kickstand wasn't returning as it should. Finally got around to taking it apart today and sorta ashamed about how much corrosion and surface rust I found. Guess it's one of those things that builds slowly over time that you don't think much about, sorta like my waistline. Snaps back quicker now than I ever remember.

Found something else I wasn't expecting either. No idea how or when.

Finally got the FJR back together so I can test ride, to work out whether I need to do any further adjustments to steering bearing torque.

I now have very nice (NTN Japan bearings with SKF Nilos dust seals) tapered rollers up front. Should never need replacement, should get rid of any handlebar wobble at any speed.

Learned a lot about how the front end of the FJR is put together. For example, did you know that on the -ES models, you can turn the upper fork tube to adjust orientation of the electronic adjustment (stepper motor) plugs?

DesertBike,

Good to hear. Miles of smiles ahead . . .

Please post Part Numbers, for the bearings and seals. Thanks.

The seals were "32006 XAV Nilos Sealing Ring" from SKF.*

*at least according to guy at the bearing shop. However doing my own Google search, I'm more confused than ever. SKF's "Nilos" product line appears to be all-metal bearing seals. The ones I used had a metal base, with rubber inner and outer lips to match the inner and outer bearing races.

The seals might be tough to order online. I can't find anyone selling seals like the ones that came with the Pivot Works kit. You may be better off talking to your local bearing shop. I spoke with a Motion Industries shop here in Albuquerque. If you have one in your town, they can order both seals and bearings for you.

The bearings were NTN (Japanese brand) 32006X bearings.

FWIW, I got the seals from a Pivot Works steering bearing kit for the FJR. However I was unable to use the included bearings, which aren't branded (I assume they're white-label made for Pivot Works by one of the big bearing suppliers). I couldn't get the PW races to go in straight! So I used the NTN 32006X bearings, which I had left over from an old project. I felt it was a bad idea to mix races from one brand with bearings from another.

More details here:

Fwiw, the all balls kit fit fine.

Rode it to work, first time in weeks!

I still don't have the Helibars riser back on it, as I expected to have to re-torque the new steering bearings at least once to get them dialed in. Stock bars feels a little weird. I think stock FJR footpegs & handlebars setup would fit me great, if I were about 6 inches shorter.

Helibars riser is back on.

I wanted to like the stock bars position, but I think for it to be truly comfortable, I'd have to be 6-8" shorter.
I did the same. I wanted it to work but risers allow longer rides with fewer rests.

Got the headset socket today, so I put the bike most of the way back together. Have a set of bars coming with less pullback so the controls will wait for a week or so.

As much as I didn’t want to, I have to put it away due to weather. The roads are snow covered and the temperatures are going to stay below freezing for a while so there won’t be any riding. Before the storm I gave it an oil change and then took it across the street to my other garage where it can rest for a while.

Pointless and stupid upgrade that nevertheless made me giggle:

Replaced the silly JIS screws on the front brake reservoir cover with stainless, hex-drive equivalents.

FWIW, they're M4x0.7 flat head screws (2.5mm hex wrench req'd). Original screws are about 15mm long, but the more common 16mm long replacement screws work fine.

Planning the same for the clutch fluid reservoir.

Tank off, T bar off, heat shield off, coolant drained. Getting ready for the 100K valve check and coolant replacement.
Noticed some dried coolant dandruff around both pipes at valve cover, so guessing the orings hardened and leaked a bit. Was starting to smell some "sweetness" once engine up to temp.
