Upgrade 2016 A model LED lights?

Hi, I have a 2016 FJR1300-A with standard fit LED headlights. Although I'm happy with the illumination they provide at night, I've become aware that I'm not all that visible during the daytime/dusk. Within minutes of riding it for the very first time early evening I had a car pull out in front of me. Then again a couple of weeks later. I put it down to coincidence and that in a random world there are statistical groupings of events.

However! I took it in for a service last week and happened to be standing outside when they brought it back from a test ride - take a look at the picture I snapped. At this angle, the onlooker can't see any real light and certainly nothing bright. It doesn't help that the silver colour also blends it into the road.

My question is, has anyone tried installing additional LED lights in the area above the main headlight - i.e. the space in which the turn LED lights are fitted to the ES models?

Anyhow, thought I'd share this with you and alert you to a problem that you may not even be aware of.

Cheers,
Jme

Its a feature of the 2016. At first a friend I was following claimed my headlights are intermittent because they are so accurately focused he couldn't see them in his rearview mirrors unless I was cresting a hill.

Its a feature which serves to not blind oncoming drivers.

Are you using your hi beam? Low beams are not noticeable during the day. MSF teaches to use the hi beams if you want to be seen.
I disagree with several of the MSF's teachings but none more vehemently than that... if it is a real MSF position and not that of a rogue instructor.

High beams at close range are illegal irrespective of day or night.

GL1800 and 2016+ FJR (and no doubt others) high beams are blinding day or night. Blinding. Seriously. No kidding. If you happen to be looking at the 2016+ from within its illumination zone you will be very uncomfortable even on low beams. The light is highly focused.

I found that, even though I run them on lowest intensity during the day, I have much better traffic response after adding Clearwater's. I think drivers subconsciously register a sole light or two lights almost touching as something further away than it is, if they even register it at all. Widening my light profile helped noticeably.

I also have a headlight modulator. It's switchable, automatically disables at night, and it too, is quite effective. But it can also confuse drivers. I only use it on rural roads with driveway entrances or in suburbs where things are so crazy it's hard not to get hit. Unless I am dealing with a distracted or passive aggressive driver crawling in the fast lane, I don't normally use it when I'm behind anyone. While I have both, the modulator is used rarely. The Clearwater's are used constantly.

Riding in the UK on full beam is a total 'no no' especially with the latest LED lights that are really blinding. I was followed some years ago by a BMW rider on full beam. I had words with him and he said that he did so for his safety, no consideration for other road users.
If you are on full beam you have lost the ability to 'flash' the lights, which can be a warning.
Other vehicles will pull out in front of motorbikes even if you are dressed up like a Christmas tree as they know that they are bigger than you and will avoid hitting them at all costs.

I have always used high beams during the day, but with the FJR people were constantly flashing me so I don't use them on it during the day. I do on my Hayabusa, feel kind of exposed not having them on, but I like to go as quickly as possible without pissing people off, so on the FJR they stay off during the day.

Two things that i’ve found really helps to get people’s attention is that on my fjr, the “flash to pass” button gets attention and since it’s momentary it really doesn’t blind. The other thing I do when coming up on left turn or pull out people is do a little wiggle/waggle with the bike which helps them see you. On my old bikes I do run with the brights on but the FJR’s piaa night-tec headlights on hi will get people flashin you.

Jme, one of the things that really sticks out in your picture that I noticed was, did you realize that you’re on the wrong side of the road and riding into traffic ?

...we drive on the 'wrong' side of road in the UK! :wink2:
