I got scammed on FJR Owners

This is zero fault of the FJR Owner's site, but I got scammed. I responded to an older ad on here for a windshield for my Gen 1. A Tom P. PMed me and said he had a friend selling one and gave the email veetoone@outlook.com. I emailed the guy and agreed to buy it, and when I asked him if he took Paypal or Venmo, he said he prefered an Apple gift card. I sent him a gift card for $50, and he said he would ship it that coming Saturday. On Sat he emailed that the shipping was more than anticipated, so I gave him another $25 to cover the overage. I asked for a tracking number and never got a response. When I searched the email address, I found it had been used to scam a person on a KTM site.
I'm normally very careful, but I let my guard down and got burned. I should of seen the redflags, like Tom P. didn't have any previous post and sending gift cards that couldn't be traced. I'm mad at myself more than anything, but I wanted put this out there to warn others to be more cautious than I was.

Okay RTSinDallas,
Sorry you got scammed once; don't let it happen again.

You didn't give us a hint what size you are looking for in a windshield, so I'll offer this.
I have 3 windshields for Gen 1 FJR in my collection.
One is a cut down shorty in very good condition, from another windshield that I liked in the summer.
One is the size of a barn door, also in very good condition, that I never used.
And one "just right size", that's beat all to shit, that I really liked.

I live in the DFW mid-cities area.
Windshields don't photo worth a damn.
If you would like to come see them and choose one, if you like, you could take it home on the spot.
If interested PM me.

This is a good time to remind people to REPORT anything suspicious. Putting a username in a post doesn't help from the same person from scamming the next guy. Click the 3 dots in the post or message and REPORT it.

Thank you.

Sorry this happened to you, but as you said yourself - it had all alarm bells going off. I recently had to sit thru a phishing training class at work and I learned that emails that urge you to do something rushed are red flags. So, when my boss sent me an email asking for a report in a few hours I felt good about reporting that as phishing

I wanted to follow up and let yall know that I have reported the scammer that PMed me to the moderators. I also reached out to Dan about buying one of his windshields.
Part of my penitence, besides the lost money, was to make my moronic mistake public on here, hoping it might remind others to stay vigilant.

.....he said he prefered an Apple gift card. I sent him a gift card for $50,......
Curious... how did you send an Apple gift card? Was it electronically to his email?

There is an excellent channel on YouTube called "Scammer Payback". They not only show you how they hack the hackers, they also intervene in active scams and have actually inserted themselves into ongoing conversations and warned the victim of the scam and stopped it mid-act. Along the way, they explain what the scam is and how they "social engineer" the victim to often go to a kiosk in a convenience store and put thousands of dollars into a bitcoin (gold, etc.) account, etc. that takes their life's savings because of the fear they have been tricked into believing.

I don't know how that works but have you called Apple, or wherever you purchased it from? Apple may be able to tell you who redeemed it. You might then get a real identity to track down.

Minimal quality list since it doesn't have any "naughty" type sites that promote "enhancement" pills and surgeries. For a long time I had a filter that deleted any email at mention of male anatomy. Stayed put until I started missing emails from a support engineer on some drag bike competition grade ignition coils I had bought.

Hate to read this. I encountered a similar situation on the VW site. I responded to an ad about some rims and was sent a PM by someone. I was directed to send an email to the "seller", which I did. After contacting the "seller" we emailed back and forth for a bit, until he wanted me to send a deposit because he had so many others interested in rims he'd had for sale for several months. I smelled scam and politely told him to piss off.

And that Saudi Prince is NOT giving you $27 million if you Paypal him $500 for shipping it.

Too bad the admins can't somehow make it mandatory for newbies to read the stickies at the top of the market place forum in order to sign up.

A Ron White quote comes to mind. Seriously - sorry for folks who got taken and if a Nigerian prince offers you some money just delete the email.
