This page https://www.sunpass.com/en/about/windshieldInstallation.shtml shows where it's currently accepted. When in northern VA and MD bikes don't need it. Express lanes and HOV are free for bikes. I always take it along anyway.

My research turned up very confusing, often contradictory, information. The best way all-around to me is to be prepared with an EZPass or comparable and hope for the best. For instance, in VA a website states

• All Express Lanes customers must travel with an E-ZPass® at all times. The Express Lanes don’t have toll booths, meaning that there isn’t an option to pay cash on the Express Lanes.

But then goes on to say

• Motorcycles don’t need an E-ZPass®. If traveling with an E-ZPass® of any type, our system will identify the vehicle as a motorcycle and the account won’t be charged.

So which is it? I dunno, I just stuck my SunPass Pro to the top of my tank and went. I got home Tuesday and thus far not a dime has been taken from my SunPass account. Who knows?

On our 48 states/4 corners ride this summer, we used EZ Pass with our account based in NC. No issues at all. Worked in all east coast states with tolls.

I've ridden the Express Lanes on the DC beltway numerous times without my transponder with no issues. You need the Flex transponder for the car as if you have three, I think, or more people to select the car pool or whatever option on the transponder and you don't get charged.

I justed checked my EZ pass bill from my trip to PA at the end of July and I have charges from the I95 and the I895 tunnel, as well as the Express Lanes. Oddly, some the of charges were delayed by 3 or 4 days.
