2004 FJR1300 Handlebar riser help needed, please.

Hello,
I just picked up a 2004 FJR1300 with ABS last week.
I immediately threw on a new set of tires and a set of knock off Helibar risers
to help overcome the fact that I'm all of 5'5" with arms as short as T-Rex.>:)
Long story short ..... betcha didn't see that coming,
It ain't gonna be enough.
Maybe when I was younger, but I've lived hard and my neck & back are awful busted up.
The current risers are 1" up, and 1 & 3/4' back.
I've seen photos of folks doubling up their risers, but for some reason, that scares me.
I've also seen folks use those nifty bolt on triple tree plates and then add helibar type risers
on top of that. That seems a little better/safer in my opinion,
but I don't see those fancy plates manufactured for a 2004.
Any thoughts comments or advice that don't involve growing longer arms
would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance.
David

The triple tree plates are not made to fit the Gen 1

Double up the Heli-bar risers, I have, it's no problem.

You will need to re-route the brake and clutch lines, and the throttle cables. They are long enough, but only just.

Brake and clutch lines will need to go inside the handlebars.

Hi Steve. Thanks for the reply.
So, you don't live in fear of component failure by there being too much leverage on the doubled up risers?
Also, by running the cables "inside the bars", do you mean behind instead of in-front-of the triple tree?
(on the side of the triple tree closest to the rider?)

Thanks again.

Thanks again, Steve & Fjroddy.
I'm coming from the upright posture of a dual sport, which I actually prefer.
I still have it.
I'm selling my cruiser to pay myself back for the FJR, and while I enjoyed the fast & loud of it
while wearing my pirate costume (LOL) I'll be glad to leave it behind as a fond memory.
If I was 6'1" I would have about a 0 percent lean angle on the bars of the FJR,
but at 55 yrs old, I'm only 5'5" and shrinking.
I think I'm at a 18 degree lean angle on the bars unless I do something.
I'm just going to keep hiking them up until I'm comfy.

This is a cool website by the way: http://cycle-ergo.com/
You can put yourself on any bike, adjust the ceat position and add risers
just to get a general idea of where you might end up.

I put THREE sets of risers on my 03. Two of the offset ones where you have to use six bolts, and the third one a straight through were you use just 3 longer bolts. I dropped the bike twice while I had them on there and lifted the bike with the left handlebar and the seat grip both times, no problem. Some of the offset ones have adjustments on them to vary the bar angle. There are several sets of used ones, of different types on Ebay.

Also there is this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/272358378231?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT

There is also a NEW one like this on Ebay. if you don't want to clean these up.
Keep in mind that you would have to drill out the tamper proof bolts that hold the ignition switch on, and buy a set of Gen.2 handlebars and a set of Gen. 2 risers.

OR you could buy the above item, AND a set of Helibar risers, http://www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/...BBRDMpoOHw4aSq4QBEiQAPm7DL-6ZAW7PdS2GrNM0NoTFi8Uby0eHHkZw9cwWGihgeMoaAnQT8P8HAQ and, of course a set of Gen. 2 handlebars.

Lots of options.

Does anyone know if longer throttle cables are available, or would I have to have some made?

I used to make my own cables for restoring old bikes ... I guess I could again. All that would be needed is the inner and outer, and end-fittings. All the rest of the fittings could be re-used.

In the instructions for the Helibar system mentioned in a previous post that bolts ONTO your upper triple clamps, they describe a way to move your throttle cables BEHIND the conglomeration of ABS lines bolted to your steering head and giving yourself a couple of inches to help with this problem.

They also include with their kit a front brake line extension, {yes it is SO ugly}.

Also, if you follow your clutch line back toward your clutch slave cylinder on the left side of your FJR you will see that it is anchored along there somewhere and by carefully tugging from the front, and pushing from the rear you can gain an inch or so on that line.

If you are interested in the throttle cable option, let me know and I will take a picture of mine so you can see what it looks like when it's finished.

Thanks Philharmonic.
You put a lot of effort in to that reply.
I also appreciate that you mentioned that you lifted the bike back up with the bars.
I actually saw the same $99 Gen II riser on eBay yesterday. :)

In regards to stacking risers, I was wondering if you may have a photo of your bike with stacked risers from a side angle (I saw the top view)? I have a set already on my 2003 Gen 1 and bought another set to install. I see the brake and clutch lines will need to be re-routed inside the bars. Did you have to lengthen the throttle cables? Thanks in advance, I appreciate any advice for this Mod.
