Hello all. Unlike my research results, I haven't changed anything to my 04' FJR (2nd owner, 117k miles). The issue just started when I pulled her out after a brief hibernation during winter in PA. About a mile from home, the speedo and tach went limp and the clock was alternating between ER_1 and ER_2. No run or response issues, so I kept riding (was running late for work) and it shortly went back to normal and stayed that way. It happened again on the way home, so I (Googled it first) checked the battery connections then unplugged the ECU and sprayed the plug and connector with contact cleaner. If anything, this made it worse or at least didn't stop it from getting worse. I'm still putting miles on, but would really like to remedy this issue without a dealer visit. What else should I be trying?
While ER_1 and ER_2 indicate communication issues with the ECU, it is extremely doubtful you have an ECU issue... more like connections....... that bike is old, so time has had the opportunity to initiate some oxidation. Perhaps time to go over the electrical system.
If you're in DiAG, are there any stored codes? Does the windshield work up and down?
I would check a few things..... the Backup fuse, but while in there, should check all fuses for potential corrosion. When you have an opportunity, check/refresh the main connector at the back of the instruments. Less likely, connection to the starter relay and fuel pump relay.
Then there's a multi-way white connector on Gen1's by the steering head which had occasional issues, not waterproof, I'd definitely check that. Given no running issues, just display issues, it's a very likely possibility.
Then there's the ground side..... Gen1 has no ground spiders, and you've already checked the battery connections. Any reason to suspect the battery is getting weak? FJR's like robust batteries.
One could refresh the main engine ground, not sure on a Gen1, but on later Gens it's on a bolt bottom right of the engine where the two case halves join.... ground is on one of the bolts.
Windshield works fine. It goes up and down quite a bit when it's 40 in the morning and 70 on the way home here in PA.
The battery is new, which is why I suspected the connections (always seem to loosen up after a few trips when new).
I will check the rest when I'm in the garage next. Thanks for the help/suggestions!
I got the lower fairings off, but am still hung up on the tops somewhere. Man, that's a lot of fasteners, lol. Anyway, as mentioned she's an old bike and had over 100k when I bought it. So the previous owner had made a few wiring modifications it appears. Am I in the right neighborhood? I'll most likely remove the "heat-troller" unit. Not sure what the other wire is from yet.
I would remove the HeatTroller if you are not sure what it controls.... should have a rheostat type switch somewhere and a place to plug in heated gear.... or, some used that particular model for variable control heated grips......
The other thing hanging down is an SAE connector, aka, Battery Tender plug so you can plug in your Battery Tender.
Actually, I meant the other red wire with yellow tape on it. I installed the battery tender plug. I found a step by step page to remove the rest of the plastics, so I'll be digging in this weekend.
This is for FJRs up to 2005. For 2006 and later, see Kaitsdad's thread here. You can also refer to that thread for info about the storage box and the headlight adjustment knobs, which later Gen-I bikes have, but which are not on my 2003. After my lowside back in October I got all new plastic...
If you have ABS it could be one or both of the sensors. One of the ABS sensors does the speedo on later FJRs
