Its hard to beat a Ninja 400 right now. Used price is surprisingly reasonable. Insurance price is good. Sporty performance with a billion replacement/aftermarket parts. Only drawback is if he is a taller chap.

I lost my 78 CB750F supersport to theft mine was never recovered. I replaced it with a 76 KZ900 but I have wanted another 78 black and orange supersport

Wow! There are some impressive lists here…
My list is rather short for ~40 yrs of riding… I tend to choose carefully and then keep my bikes for several years.
Having more than one was always temporary while transitioning to something new and selling the old… always bought used.

Started with a bunch of ratty 70’s Yamaha 2 stroke dirt bikes (DT125/175/MX250, all basket cases)
’76 Yamaha XT500 (got it non-running, had a super-trapp down pipe, put way too much $$ in it)
'80 Suzuki GS1100E (My first street bike, did my first weekend rides on this bike around Nor Cal)
’85 Yamaha FJ1100 (wreck rebuild, bent frame, everything in front of gas tank replaced, was told previous owner sued Yamaha for faulty brakes… never heard how that ended)
’80 Suzuki GS750E (college beater bike, found it on some guy’s front porch, in pieces)
’86 Yamaha FJ1200 (first bike purchase after college, had a Fox Double clicker rear shock/Corbin seat)
’86 Kawasaki Concours ZG1000 (bought from German exchange student after he found he couldn’t export it back home).
’86 Honda Nighthawk 700 ($100 junker, got it running just for fun, then gave to local bike junkyard/scrapper)
’98 Triumph Tiger (had for several years, kids were young, only put a few thousand miles on it, nice BRG color, dual yosh cans).
’95 Honda ST1100 (commuter bike, loved that smooth V4 but eventually wanted to get back to an inline 4).

The most surprising thing (to me) is that only one of the four motorcycles I own today is Japanese (Yamaha). It's surprising because I've been driving for 50 years and have only owned Japanese cars (Datsun, Honda, Nissan, Lexus).

Started with Britbikes in 1968, 650 BSA and then Triumph Bonneville. Interregnum, assorted Japanese bikes ending with a GPz750.The most fun of the Japanese bikes was the early -80s XT500. 15 year break while I worked overseas. After retirement, a 2013 FJR.

2007 Suzuki Vstrom DL1000 - used. Had tons of dirt road adventures on this bike. Scott's steering stabilizer, upgraded suspension and many other accessories. Destroyed by a drunken idiot head-on'ing me last year.
2019 Suzuki Vstrom DL650 - used. This was the "recovery" motorcycle I bought once I was fixed enough to ride again last fall, but still regaining strength and mobility. I really should sell it, garage is crowded and it needs upgrades if I'm going to keep it long term.
2015 Yamaha FJR-1300ES - used. Most recent purchase, just shy of 1 month ago. Wow, that flew by! It's fun.

Been riding for 10 years or so, but only have had 3 bikes. I had Goldilocks syndrome. First one was too small, second one was too big, third one was juuuuuust right.

The Vulcan had 6500 miles when I bought it in 2012 and I put more miles on it than I did on the BMW. The BMW had 80k miles when I got it and it was starting to get rough around the edges. I was not looking forward to replacing the dry clutch on it, which is placed in line between the engine and transmission like a car, necessitating a full removal of everything from the engine back. And regular maintenance was ridiculous to do, there was so much tupperware on the damn thing. I do miss the reverse gear sometimes, though.

My list. Got my license in 1974 @ 14. Other than the CL125, none were purchased because of brand, rather each one was evaluated against available competition at the time for how it would meet what I now call the "mission profile" - what I expected the bike to do - and value, cost/performance ratio.

Starting with the GS750, bikes are considered projects - evaluated for what they could be, with various modifications, not just as oem delivered. Most have/had custom suspension and intake/exhaust/A-F tuning - yet to meet a stock bike I liked. The KTM is closest to stock since the C-10.

The 1000 Interceptor scores the lowest overall for me, actually being a downgrade from the GS1100 it replaced. The KTM scores the highest for me - it just checks all kinds of "boxes", light, super power, comfortable, and I got a hell of a deal on it. I have a love affair with the Suz Bandit, having owned one for 25 yrs - its the ultimate UJM.

Never owned an FJR though a long time riding buddy has owned 3 over the past 15 years or so, so I have seat and modification time with them. I moved away from big ST bikes after the C-10, before FJR's existed. I prefer more "standard" UJM type bikes with a shield and soft bags (most don't consider a KTM SDR a "UJM", but the ergonomics are there).

05 Harley FLHTI Electra Glide Standard (New) 1st year with color other than black. It was Black Cherry Pearl, similar to the 07 FJR color. Kept for 7 years and 95 K miles.
12 Harley FLHTK Ultra Limited (New) Traded the 98 and the 05 Harleys for this one. Still have it. 81 K miles.
20 Yamaha FJR 1300 ES (New) Considered it to replace the 900 lb Harley LTD. Not sure if it will fit the bill totally. Maybe after seat mods. Time will tell.
I currently own 3 bikes. The Vmax, The Harley and the FJR. Life is good.
