Touring (Top case or no case ?)

5490 Views 48 Replies 29 Participants Last post by  mortenk
Doing a fairly long trip this summer and still debating in my head whether or not to take my 50L Yamaha top case or just go with a couple waterproof dry bags strapped behind me.

Love the ability to throw things like drinks, snacks and easily accessible items like gloves and stuff in a top case but wondering if I really need it ? I also use a tank bag and a couple of motech dry bags behind me for camping gear etc. Top case would ONLY be used for quick access stuff.

To any of you guys who have done long trips what are your thoughts?

Would be great to hear from people who actually used a 50L top case and then decided to either not to again or love it for whatever reason.

Yamaha told me when I broke my subframe & added the heavy aluminum rack that they only recommended a max weight rating of 10lbs there.
When I talked with SHAD about weight limits with a SH59X and their tubular Y0FJ15ST frame, it boiled down to one limit (5kg?) being set by the lawyers, with the engineers saying it was good for MUCH higher - as in "don't worry about it".

Ludwig,, I could never get an answer out of Shad on any of this, Yamaha on the other hand was quite vocal about the weight limits BUT when I pointed out that the top box exceeded their weight limit (Givi is the lightest) and enquired whether that was considered part of the 10lb limit or the 10lbs was additional,, they got very quiet and did not respond.

But I would state that imho you should keep things light there, and as delivered a Stiffy WILL NOT keep from breaking the subframe, it just doesn’t add the needed support BUT it will keep your broken-piece’s from littering the Highway behind you.
Love my OEM 50L top case. Keep it on all the time, for long trips too.

To be completely honest I do not have a conventional top case for my FJR but I made a bastardized one for the courier work that I do with the bike and it works fine. However, when ever I go on a long trip I take it off. I like to take a waterproof backpack with me and strap it on the rear rack and/or the rear seat affixed to the panniers for a few reasons. One being that I can take it off easy and carry my bag in a hotel room or a spot that I stop to utilize it or it's contents. I can just bungie net it back on when I am packed and done. Two, I like the break from having something large behind my back and when I position my bag the right way I can lean against it when I change my sitting style to give the knees a rest. Third, and this is purely personal, I feel like the bike reacts better and is less top heavy when I do not have weight or a large case behind me. It may purely be a mental thing but I love taking the rack off and going "low profile" for a good long ride. I dunno, just me maybe but I like the feel.
I know people say you can stow your riding gear in it when you stop and it's a good place to hold things but the way I look at it I have my tools and emergency items in one pannier, personal items that need storage in the other and then use my bag for clothes, snacks, etc. things I would need to pull out on a stop that is more then gas. If I added the top case/luggage rack I would be more inclined to fill it with s#!t I don't need. I also really only bring minimal clothes and rely more on undewear and socks. I don't mind being stinky for a good long trip as long as i have drawers and socks. Kinda like stuff I would throw in the back seat of my truck as opposed to the bed. I also leave my helmet and gloves on the bike when I do a short stop because I "wish-a-mutherfugger-would" and they never do. But hey, YMMV.

I have a shad something or other top case. I’ve taken it and also gone without it on weekend rides. Weekend rides meaning being gone for a couple nights. I’ve decided that unless I’m going to be gone for more than a couple days I’ll go without it. Mostly because I was probably over packing to being in with. Roll up waterproof bag and side cases are enough for me, unless like I said I plan to be gone for longer. I run a tank bag as well.

I can't stand the look of the big ROUND topboxes out there, but I do love the extra storage. I ended up modifying an Apache hard case from harbor freight to be a topbox on a Givi mount. I'm sure some would say it looks tacky or cheap but I like the look and it adds some nice weather resistant storage.

I use my FJR as my daily commuter, so every little bit counts with storage.

It may just be my affinity for Pelcan type cases (or what usually comes in them) but I like this look and the more "low-profile" signature. I am planning on doing something like this for when I get my streaming gear all situated to house the electronics. I also plan to make small "snorkels" for dry air intake and exhaust to cool the parts and a case like this will work perfect.

Love my SHAD expandable 46L, 52L, 58L https://www.shadusa.com/products/d0b58206 expandable hard top case. Adapts to many loads and doesn't look that awkward while in the 46L configuration.
I use a little small Shad one. I hate how they look but I love how they function on tours. Put your overnight stuff and regular luggage in your side cases and use the top case for rain gear, mixed nuts, Gatorade etc etc. Whenever you’re grabbing a 15 minute break and you pop the bike up on the center stand, the top case is right at your chest…perfect for things you need along the way. When I’m NOT touring, there’s no chance I’ll have a top case on..lol

Then why isn't it on the bike in your profile pic? ;)

I use the 39L topcase 24/7/365. When I'm riding I never even know it's there. Besides, it is the perfect place to store it instead of up in the rafters somewhere.

I bought my 2021 almost 2 years ago and have logged over 20,000 miles on it: one long trip from here in Montana to Maine and back and another one from here to Seattle and down to through Oregon and Idaho. I've thought about a top case but, so far, haven't gone that way. I have never stayed in a motel as I camp out on these trips and just put a bag, sleeping bag, and tent behind me and secure with Rokstraps. In the photo below it shows a small satchel on top of my my main bag. That has gloves, rain gear, sweatshirt. I have a small tank bag for water, phone, wallet, etc. An iPad is in a side case with a few other items. Other side case has my camp stove, tools, etc.

IMHO Vince brings up a good point. I am not a camper. I much prefer A/C and a shower at the end of the day, call me spoiled . My last two multiday trips were multidays in the wet and the last thing I want to do is set up, live in and break down a camp in the pouring rain. And I mean pouring as in creeks overflowing and roads with 2, 3, 4" of water, all the way from Frederick, MD to Gallipolis, OH. No way to escape it- sideways Forrest Gump rain with muddy flash flooding rolling off the WV mtns into and down the road. The trip before that I rode from Coopertown, NY to central NC in the pouring rain. My whole body was like a giant prune-ish toe.

But if I were the camping type, I wouldn't use a top case either. It seems too restrictive for the bulkier & odd-shaped needs.

If i had had to put up/make camp the day i rode in 250 miles of tropical storm, i would have probably just gone to the local pawn shop, bought a revolver and ate that for dinner 😆. Instead I had a shower, laid all my gear around the whole room and went to get Italian 😆

I hear that. I've been rained on a few times but it adds to the adventure. :) Summer before last I was returning to Montana from Maine and after touring the UP in Michigan I was going through Duluth, headed for International Falls, and it poured, a lot. I was on Hwy 11, following along the appropriately named Rainy River, and somewhere east of Baudette I'd had enough. I finally saw a camping sign and pulled into an empty campground right along the river. There was a picnic shelter and set my tent up underneath it. Luckily most my gear was dry and it was actually a nice evening, watching the river with Canada just across it.

One thing I like about camping is that I'm a distance runner and I love getting up in the morning and going out for a 3-5 mile run in a new area, especially on trails. It gets me ready for another 300-400 miles on the bike that day. And I'm no spring chicken. I'm 70.

I think you will kick yourself if you don't take it. On my last long trip, I used it many times a day to store my gloves, GPS, and helmet so I wouldn't have to haul them around. Never regretted having it along!

Well guys I'm sold. I'll be taking it for sure. I appreciate all the feedback. I hope others find the post useful. It's good to get a cross section of other guys who tour and tips and tricks. I'm used to touring on my Super10 where the top case feels more natural. Exactly like my setup on my S10, I will be duplicating the on the FJR right down to the tankbag. The Motech bags on the passenger seat is all camping stuff

Very observant, yeah that pic was from the first time I rode the Tail of the Dragon and left it at the hotel in Robbinsville. I almost never take it off now.
I go back and forth on top case. On my previous FJR1300 to this one I had the factory top case and used it a few times. I camp so lots of gear. One issue I didnt like on long multi week trips was on tarmac blast across large spans of hwy 85-90mph the cross winds arent fun to ride with the sail sorry top case

My LAX to Anchorage ride this summer will be sans top case. Dry bag with sleeping bag as back rest, behind that a 40L dry bag with tent, pad, chair, tarp, rain gear...

Cooking gear and misc clothes in one pannier and tools and misc gear in the other. Ie heavy stuff low in panniers lighter weight stuff on top of bike in dry bags

Of course the tank bag for electronics, glasses, locks etc...

I do like the top case for local rides but not for long multi week trips
