Not convinced by set up of suspension on FJR. Local dealer says its fine but seems to me to be soft. Does anyone in the UK know someone they would recomend preferable not too far South as stay in NE Scotland.

Hi duncgr,

The FJR has always had soft "behind". I'm on my second one and have found that unless you spend a few bob on an urated rear shock and change your front springs for progressive ones, you'll always have a bit of a wallowy bott!

What I've done with my is always keep the rear shocker on "hard" setting whether riding alone or 2 up, get underneath it, click it right up to stiffest setting then back off 3-4 clicks. Either put in progressive springs up front and click the settings on each leg all the way up to stiff, then back off 3-4 clicks.

You could also (when its due) when changinging the fork oil, instead of refilling each leg with the recommended 90 ml, put in 100 ml, that will stiffen it up a bit - thats what I'm running just now.

At the end of the day its personal preference, your riding style and what you want to do with the bike. Have a play yourself with your settings with the handbook bud and see if you can get somewhere near where you want to be - its not too fiddly and you might be surprised. Its a shame that the rear shocker is such a weak one, especially when you consider that Yamaha own Ohlins.

Good luck mate,

Regards, Glenn. 8)

Hi Duncgr, can I have a few more details ie, What model do you have, how do you ride also do you ride 2up etc..

But basically if you are not going to upgrade the suspension stiffen up both ends and put the rear damping close to max to stop the rear offloading.
This is only a starting point adjust to suit.

Hi Guys thanks for the responses.

Bill - yeah it is Ecosse I use.

Glenn - Thanks for the advice - will try that - just always a bit cautious about mucking around with it myself. It is particularly te front end I was finding a bit soft.

Woody - Its an 07 A that I have, riding style tends to be "average" not a scarping pegs lad but don't just sit on A roads either. I sometimes ride 2 up although 80% of mileage would be by myself with some gear in panniers. My idea was that if I could get setup right fr 1 up on the soft setting that when I was 2 up I could just flick to hard.

I think you'll find that hard setting will be best for most 1&2up but try these.

Solo Settings:
Motorway / Smooth A roads Soft Preload & middle to high damping.
Fast A/B roads Hard Preload & Max Damping.

With Passenger:
All types of road & riding Hard & Max ( be careful if riding hard while 2up as the rear suspension can bottom out ).

Passenger & Luggage: Caution
Change the rear shock as it will over heat really quick, but if you want to try it first be careful.

As for the forks set between 1 & 2 lines showing and 2-3 extra clicks on the damping from standard leave the compression damping until you have found a good preload & damping setting then start to adjust the Comp damping.

Most members change the shock and a quiet a few change the front springs.

Try the settings and go from there as the new Fjr's have heavier springs fitted and you way well find that you can manage as we all have different riding styles.

Good luck and just enjoy riding the power.

Static would be better Rabbit but, he would have to do it everytime the load changed. The setting is only base/starter and Duncgr can go from there. I assumed Duncgr didnt know about such things since the question was raised. :?
