Semi Auto or Full Manual

Put me down for Manual.

I have spoken to several dealers who can not tell me how I would take an uphill hairpin where on my existing bike I would 'feather' the clutch to give me the control I would like. Does anyone on here know the answer.

I will be looking to replace my 01 Fjr with the new manual model as soon as it is available over here.

A couple of days ago I went out house hunting on the bike. The owner of the house that I presently rent has sold it out from under me, and the new owners are going to knock it down and build units.

Anyway, after a couple of hours ducking in and out, and round and round, the suburbs, I had made a few thousand gear changes and my clutch hand and forearm were in agony. I thought, I would pay a lot of money for a clutchless shift right about now.

Also, in a race or drag situation, I'm sure the automatic gear change would be a lot faster than manual changes. But the thing that worries me is towing the trailer, how would the automatic handle taking off with a heavy load where lots of revs and clutch feathering may be required?

Good question Bernie! Not that I'm currently in the market ('05 ABS), but there are a few poorly designed intersections around here that have you started on an impressive uphill.
Starting with a pillion & loaded cases results in an elevated 'pucker factor'. I'd love to see how the automatic handles it.

I doubt Yamaha spent much time considering the effects of towing a trailer with the FJR, with a clutch lever or without.
Since the AE engine hooks up with a clutch, IMO, it's unlikely towing a trailer would make any difference.

Once you are up to whatever speed and engine rpm you want to shift at in first gear, you should be able to click through the gears without any throttle changes. It should lower lap times for the Ricky Racers among us. :D
Here is what the cage manufacturers say about auto to Tiptronic:
"All gear changes take place without any interruption in engine power. This is particularly advantageous when towing a trailer..... it permits, for example, downshifting on winding mountain roads to increase the braking effect of the engine or for a particularly sporty driving style."

I'd have to go with the manual version, but I am impressed with Yamaha's pushing the envelope with the AE. Good on Yamaha!

It does not look like we will get the non manual in SA until 2007. I will definetily consider getting the "auto"

... or at least introduce the system on a bike MADE for newbies, and let sport-touring folks get a taste of it, before they have to buy it sight unseen.

And 20valves, you can't vote twice... naughty!

Have to agree with the hairpin probs, Tholt-y-Will springs to mind. :lol:

No doubt I am wrong but I understand that there is a button to operate the clutch on the AS UK version.

Hey Liquid, good thing the manual shifting FJRA has the weight advantage, otherwise I'd get beat by the FJREL (quicker) shifters. :oops: :lol:

Eh Petey, without a clutch, you'd ride to Arkansas and forget how to ride your GS. ;)
