I did a search for this but came up empty. Anyone consider the possibility of swapping the guts of an '05 drive with the '06? Dropping the RPM's down 500-600 on long cruises would be nice if it can be done at reasonabe cost and reliability.

I think a 6th gear as a overdrive would have been a better idea and keeping 5th the same, as 500rpm wouldnt make much difference to me.

I agree that a 6th gear would have been ideal, but they didnt do it. I do find myself searching for the next gear sometimes at speed only to find Im already in 5th.

It would an expensive way to alter the gearing just for 500rpm and you still may try and find another gear?

Final Drive

The '05 & '06 final drives are identical -- they both have the same gear ratio. The transmission's output gear on the '06 has 37 teeth. That same gear on the '05 and earlier had 36 teeth.

For a given road speed in any gear the following is true:

'06 Engine RPM = '05 Engine RPM X 36/37 = '05 Engine RPM X 0.973

Yes the gearbox/motor would have to be stripped down not the final drive unit. Oh I see I didnt read it that way.

Ok. I thought they left the trans unchanged and just made the rear drive gears taller. Thanks for the clarification.

There's not going to be much in it with these changes (-2.7% overall)
3000:-81.....4000:-108....5000:-135.....6000:-162.....7000:-189

Am I reading that right? I can guarantee you will not be doing the indicated mph shown above if you mean to say 81mph at 3K rpm, 108 at 4K rpm, etc.

Personally, I like the '06 gearing and think it's about exactly right. A six speed on a bike with this much motor would be even more gained weight. With a redline of 9K and an indicated 80 mph at around 4K in 5th, it works very well. It's a little more difficult to wheelie in first gear but that's probably not the main activity of an FJR rider anyway.

He is from the land down under, so there could well be kilometers involved somewhere

rear end

The drive ratio of the VMax is about 10% higher (lower RPM at same MPH) and the gears will drop in.
Same "pumpkin",different number of teeth.
