As a 40 year resident of the land of sunshine, I have very little use for warm or insulated clothing. Even on the cooler days we experience here in SoFla, rarely do I ever wear more than a light, inexpensive sweatshirt under my mesh jacket to stay warm.

We're planning a trip to a cooler clime though and have to prepare, so my wife bough one of these Patagonia puff jackets for me. It's incredibly light and thin yet reportedly well insulated, warm and water-resistant. Better yet, it folds up into a very small bit. I'm thinking that it would be an immensely practical and convenient under-jacket for those who layer up whilst riding.

XXL is my normal size and this one fits me well. I'm sure it'll slide right under my Tourmaster mesh jacket w/ease.

One thing to remember about puff jackets. They get their R-value from being puffy. If you compress that under a tight jacket the insulation value takes a dive. Same reason you don't smash your house insulation flat in the wall.

If you want a good thin warm base layer - look at some under armour 4.0 shirt and long underpants. I wear them under my ski racing suit when it is below 0 and it is some warm stuff. Not super cheap but lasts forever.

One thing I found that works really well under bikers' jackets when it gets a little cool- golfers' wind shirts. Very thin but stop the wind completely. Another thing I'll do when it cools off is simply put on my rain gear. I always have it with me, it works superbly, and it keeps me from having to carry multiple outer garments.

I have a motorcycle brand puff type jacket and I wear it under a more ADV style jacket, and it is pretty warm. I'm not sure what it will do under mesh. Keep in mind, I'm in NC not MI or MN...

I wear 100 weight Smartwool long sleeve or short sleeve T-shirts and long johns as a base layer when it’s cool. When it’s cold I add a 250 weight Smartwool mid-layer. If it’s stupid cold I add a Patagonia fleece.

And of course it's all relative. I'm sure my "stupid cold" in central NC is significantly different than yours. If there's a need for long johns I'm not riding!

Looks like a splendid jacket.

Keep in mind that any jacket with down as an insulator needs to be kept DRY, otherwise it loses it ability to keep you warm.

I don't know about other cold weather riding gear threads. This one is mine tho and I started it. You're free to walk on by but I suspect, judging by the number of posts you have and how often you jump into everyone's threads to offer your opinions, you don't have anything better to do.

In my experience Patagonia jackets are sized a bit smaller than their labels would indicate. Their target audience is the young and fit. My daughter and her husband were designated reps for Patagonia for a few years. This was a program where Patagonia encouraged some selected people to wear their products by giving them significant discounts. The discounts extended to family members... even those who were anything but the image Patagonia was seeking, hence my sizing experience.

If you'd have noticed the smiley in my post you would have known it was said with humor. Besides, offering and respecting others opinions or posting some humor is what makes for conversation and the exchange of ideas. A little enlightenment never hurt anybody.

Don't be so friggin' sensitive.

Every site has people like you. Have to post a response in every thread, have to make sure everyone knows you're here, that you've been there and done that, that all experience lies within them as a wealth of knowledge. It's tiresome, tedious and narcissistic. So instead of offering me unasked for advice on my behavior, howsabout you do some self-reflection.
