Just venting.. jacket woes...

4195 Views 33 Replies 18 Participants Last post by  Whooshka
Tell me, does anyone have a jacket that doesn't snag your helmet chin strap with the velcro zipper cover on their collar after turning your head to the right?

I have a couple different textile jackets with the velcro flap that covers the top of the zipper.. one is a first gear, the other is a tourmaster (I know, I know.. I'm shopping for better gear, which is why I desperately need suggestions).. every time I look to the right, my helmet's chin strap snags on the velcro flap on the jacket.. it's maddening.

Please tell me what you like! I'm trying to stick with textile adventure-style 3-season jackets that have zippered vents and removeable warmth or rain liners.

Thanks!

I have a Klim that the velcro collar/strap can tuck into itself (if that makes sense). I can ride with it unzipped say 6 inches and not worry about the strap sand blasting away at my neck.

Which model Klim do you have? Their offerings kind of run the spectrum.
If you don't need it to "latch", get a mating piece of velcro and stick it to it. Olympia folds on itself and sticks with mating velcro.

I have the same problem with my Aerostich suit at times.
Aerostich had the same complaints with their Darien jackets. They added rare earth magnets to both the tab and the collar to hold the tab back. They're fairly inexpensive and could probably be Shoe Goo'd or something to your existing jacket. If it doesn't work or falls off you wouldn't be out much.

I have to say.. none of my jackets do this. I recommend neck lengthening exercises.

I just looked in my closet. I was wrong. It is my Alpinestars jacket that has a "loop" you can double back the velcro flap into. My Klim has a fabric "tent" over the top of the zipper to avoid neck irritation. It's a mesh Induction jacket.

My cold weather FXR textile jacket has a velcro high neck fastener strap that when loose can snag on my chin strap. Not a deal breaker for me, I just re-fasten the neck strap and all is good.

My Klim Induction mesh summer jacket has no such issues.
I wear a Joe Rocket Alter Ego 4.1 and on both styles, I do not have that interference.

By both styles, I mean it can be a warm weather textile, and when it is cold, or rainy, I can add the outer shell and it does not interfere with my helmet strap.

I wear a Shoei RF-1200.

Custom made to your measurements. Highly suggest the strech Kevlar. I have the jacket and pants. First kit that fits everywhere and comfy all day long. I have the GP-2 jscket because I just don't do the 3/4 length well but they have all lengths. Not any more pricey than Klim.

@Brady Williams good news: if your Tourmaster jacket is anything like the one I had (Transition 4), the cheapo imitation Velcro on the collar tab will wear out, and will stop sticking, which also means no more snags on helmet strap.

I believe I had the same beef with that jacket, which you are having with yours, for the same reason.

On my Motoport jacket, a customized Ultra II, I had a few options.

I could close the collar by Velcro. Usually what I did in cold weather.

When it got warmer, I could fold the closing tab back on itself, and stick it to another patch of Velcro sewn on the outside of the collar.

That outer patch came with a corresponding cover. The cover was the opposite side of Velcro, backed with the same fabric as the jacket shell (turquoise "Stretch" in my case). That kept the patch of Velcro from grabbing things, like my helmet strap. It also looked good, as everything matched.

There was a corresponding cover for the patch of Velcro on the inner collar, so that when I had the tab to the side, that patch also wouldn't snag on things or catch fuzz & dirt.

For truly hot weather, I could pull the collar further open to the sides, and stick its "wings" to the chest of the jacket with two more Velcro patches. I had covers for those chest patches as well, so that they wouldn't snag things or accumulate fuzz when not in use. 4 covers total.

I stowed the covers in a zippered inside pocket when not in use, so as not to lose them during the several months of hot weather.

Can post pics if all that is not clear. It was an excellent system.

Once that jacket was ruined in a crash, I got the Rev'It Sand 4 H2O jacket. It has a snap to hold the collar tab open when I want more air, or am wearing my heated jacket liner.

I think a snap at collar is the way to go. Will pretty much never wear out, and doesn't require a cover to avoid snagging helmet straps or neck gaiters.

A friend of mine just picked up this jacket. It is a waxed canvas with CE inserts.

Here is the Iron&Resin Linky

What do you all think of this brand?

Like: Snaps everywhere. Armor.

Dislike: Practically no abrasion protection. Canvas won't behave much differently from denim, in a slide.

Seems to have no venting, and does have built-in waterproofing (Reissa).

Suspect that jacket would be too hot for most of my year, here in the desert. Probably great for southern CA or other mild climates though.

My new Shoie Neotec has a different buckle and it seems like that is helping. It's the std loop buckle that always got caught.

I've got the neotec II and even with the ratchet buckle, it catches on my collar flap when I rotate my head back to center after looking hard right. I need to go try on some jackets while wearing my helmet to see what's different about the other suggested brands (I would trade my kingdom to be closer to Iron Pony).

Maybe you can do something different with your helmet strap. It's likely the loop created by snapping it back to itself that is snagging.
Look at a different way of controlling that loop/loose end. Tuck it between the strap and your neck, for instance. Or maybe add a snap in a different place that doesn't create such a big loop.
