Huge jump in ads?

1021 Views 20 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  bounce
Did we just get a huge jump in ads? It looks like we're getting ads in every 6 threads which is REALLY getting distracting when trying to read the thread titles.
All the random motion screws with my ADD like you wouldn't believe.
Can we dial it back just a BIT?

I use a free ad blocker with my browser. Never an ad in sight.

I just block all the major ad spammers at my router and I don't see any either

As in, what? I'm partial to Fortigates professionally. I'm running no ISP modem, a Synology firewall, then Ubuntu & Pi-Hole taking care of all DHCP reservations.

Netgear commercial router. Anything on GitHub is just asking to be hacked. Hello, here is my source code go crazy.

We'll have to disagree. Running Pi-Hole + unbound is a solid solution for blocking advertisements, and prevents your ISP from tracking your web activity via DNS requests. If you have WCF enabled along with protective DNS in a commercial environment, that's also a solid solution, but does not block as many advertising domains as Pi-Hole does. Being on Github is not automatically a bad thing either.

How do you block ads when using a telephone ☎?
Some of us cavemen have never had a proper 🖥 😁

Edge for Android does a pretty decent job. Otherwise you can add the typical Google syndication and doubleclick sites to your restricted list. Alternately there are 3rd party ad blockers you can buy. This is all on Android. No idea on apple stuff.

iPhone just has an option to not share data and turn ads off. Super easy.

lol. "it just works"

Thanks for the heads up on the options. Also, I'm glad to see some fellow nerds on here!
I don't mind a few ads. I know it's how the board supplements paid accounts... but it just seems to have gotten crazy and it's just hella distracting to me.

Or you can make a donation to the board to help keep it running. Just sayin'.

I've installed 4 for me and my family. They work (Pi-Hole) and help not just the device with adblockers installed. ALL devices on your network get the (inbound AND outbound) advantage (like your TV which keeps wanting to phone-home ever half second). Maybe a little overkill for the question being asked but it fixed that and tons of other stuff.

I use uBlock Origin on my desktop in addition to the network-attached Pi-Hole. I also stops cross-linking-scripts.

I said above that I respect that ads supplement the paid accounts. It just seems like the ads have jumped in number.

Make sure to block outbound port 53 and 853 at your firewall, prevents IOT devices that have hard coded DNS entries from bypassing Pi-Hole. Not as easy to block DoH, need a SPI firewall to do it in a meaningful way.

Interesting. I'd honestly never seen it before today.
