Hold my beer.....

Hi guys and gals ~ I'm living in Sedona, AZ and today purchased a 2010 FJR 1300. Right now it's in California and will be shipped to me next week.

My last bike was a BMW R1200RT and it was a rocket.....I'm thinking this FJR will be sportier and more fun to drive.

First bike was in 1959 3 hp Briggs and Stratton mini bike with centrifugal clutch and no brakes....ridden all my life, 71 now.

I'll be searching for some upgrade ideas, riding, tech everything, I'm sure there's a wealth of knowledge here, don't know what I can contribute but here I am!

I noticed that the left lever, looks a little "curled." I wonder if it has laid down on that side?

Everything else, as mentioned above looks Great!! What a Great deal you got!! I believe you are gonna love riding it!

Thanks that didn't catch my eye...I'll have to look closer. It'll be here this Wednesday if all goes well.

Nice find! I am assuming it is a California model which means it has the evaporative emissions charcoal canister. Can lead to some hot starting issues and makes removing the plastic pieces a PITA. If you ever have reason to remove the side panels you might want to remove it.

Yes it is a California bike.

I'm not much of a mechanic, so have no idea what or where that would be. I guess I could always Google that and see if it's something I can do. Thanks for the heads up. Do the stock exhausts have catalytic converters in them?

The members here can turn you into a mechanic pretty easily. I own a '74 Triumph TR6 and have a T-shirt that says "TR6... turning drivers into mechanics since 1969" LOL

And no need to Google. There is a search bar top center of the page. Lots of info here and people willing to help. Better than a dealer. And yes, cats are in the stock exhaust cans.

I was thinking the same, Whooshka! Maybe even at the dealership! Easy fix, and it "should" not affect performance.
I know, I should already know this, but isn't the CAT material in the collector? Aren't the cans just resonators, or mufflers?
I believe the cats are in the collector.....

Gen I - No cats in the exhaust, only the collector. Gen II - they did something different as exhaust cans went up in weight. IIRC, they added cats to the exhaust cans to what was already in the collector. Gen III+ - I am fairly certain they eliminated the cats in the exhaust cans again and weight went down.

Congratulations, I'm the proud owner of a 2022 FJR 1300...the only one left in California. Serious supply constraints on 22s and 23s, and saddlebags still shipping separately from Yamaha. Most dealers only got a handful of the new bikes in 2022. Rode it home from dealership last week, waiting for the good weather to go for a nice long ride.

At 58 years old, in October of 2021, I sold my Old-Man Gold Wing and I purchased a pristine 2014 FJR 1300 A with only 1838 miles on it. I trailered it home (about 4.5 hours each way) and completed an oil change and final drive fluid change as well as a gas tank drain and fill. The FJR Shaft Drives rock and are so easy to maintain. Oil changes are a breeze too on the FJR.

The only non-consumable item that needed attention on my purchase was a missing nut from one of the two left mirror mounting bolts inside the fairing. It seems this particular factory nut has a nasty habit of vibrating loose or, in my case, vibrating completely off. So, for 40 cents and 20 minutes of labor, I replace the nut with one that won't vibrate loose. Otherwise, my new to me FJR was/is in like-new condition. It also came with the taller touring windshield installed and the original sport windshield in the box.

• I paid $9,000 even for my 2014 and passed on a 2012 model with only 1100 miles on it for $7900 to get the updated features of the 2014 model.
• I love the blue 2012 but cruise control and other enhancements are worth the extra few bucks.
• A 2013 model was also available but the Cruise Control stops at 80 MPH on the 2013 model. The 80 MPH Cruise Control limit was removed from the 2014 model.
• I looked at a 2016 but the 6-speed is not necessary, and the transmission recall means you won't have a 100% factory transmission. Most have had no issues but there have been some Oopsies.

At 5200 miles, I purchased new tires as the originals were oxidized and wearing badly. The new Michelin Road 6 GT tires have been great, and many say they should last more than 10,000 miles. Time will tell. Oh, ask for right-angle stems when you get new tires to simplify tire pressure checks, etc. I also replaced both the Break and Clutch Fluid. This should be done more often than most people do it. The age of these fluids is more important than miles for their service. Mine will get done every 2 years as it is not too pricey and can prevent problems down the line.

I also installed a Misgel Ram Mount and Quad Lock with vibration damping that charges my phone/GPS as I ride.

If your new (to you) FJR does not have them already, you may want to invest in Frame Sliders (T-Rex N69-13) and Luggage Guards (T-Rex N69-13LGB5) like I did. The cost of the T-Rex (or another brand) protection is far less than what it will cost if you simply have a non-rolling drop in your garage or on your driveway. You can install these yourself in well under an hour.

So, once your fluids are serviced, your FJR will basically be bulletproof like all FJRs. You can save a few bucks by going with older models but you will give up features that for me have become must-haves now that I’ve used them.

My only issue with my 2014 model is that my red beauty just won't let me ride slowly. I swear I am trying but she just won't let me. ~grin~ After all, red is the fastest color.

Ok bike purchased sight unseen....road around for a day now tearing into it.

Wonder what is leaking here? Looks like previous owner rode it but didn't spend any time cleaning it....this indicates something up front is leaking. Comments?

Down this same rabbit hole I found two wires with connectors on the ends like they would hook up straight to the battery terminals just dangling loose. Not connected to the battery and it's late so I'm knocking off for the evening, pretty cold outside/no garage...but I can't tell where those two wires may go, one back under fuel tank and the other under the battery it seems.

You're just going to have to trace those wires to know for sure but considering how it appears the previous owner put that bike together I'd guess they're for aftermarket accessories. Probably just abandoned them in place which might have been a gift to you. The flatter dual wire looks like a typical battery tender connection but the larger round one . . . ?? It's common to run power to a fuse block somewhere, more often than not back under the seat; look there maybe.

As far as leaks, if you don't see anything wet then that's a positive. That area is hard to clean and it might be residue left over when the PO installed those steel braided lines. Nothing looks half-assed on that bike.
