No, not normal. Should show when in first, blank and green indicating light on in neutral.

 

My 14 stopped indicating first, if I recall correctly. Since it didn’t affect bike function, I didn’t worry about it.

 

My 14 ES sometimes disappears. Normally if I shift with little more force it reappears. No idea why.

 

It happens. While I haven't had the issue....... find the gear position switch on the left side of the engine, remove the two screws and give it a cleaning. May have to remove the upper shifter linkage, not sure. Probably some oil in there and the contacts could use a little refresh. I wouldn't recommend any real abrasives, perhaps contact cleaner and a good wipe. EZPZ really.

 

 

Use an impact driver!! The "switch" is not a switch, so no internal moving parts, it's just a set of contacts. The moving part is the pin on the tranny shaft.

 

Sometimes the solution is a bigger hammer.

 

There are reasons I can't watch those vids.

 

I have plenty of hammers but not always desired results

 

Key on/ engine off
select the gear that doesn't appear
use your index finger and press on the sensor with moderate pressure, poke around some.
I did this to mine and the display came back, must be a bad connection under the sealant stuff that holds it all together.

My YES Warranty is expiring in October, dealer got me a new switch/sensor in return for my old faulty one that wouldn't read 5th gear until it was hot. I don't know the cost, he didn't say and I didn't ask. Yamaha part #1MC-82540-00
It does not come with the sealing o-ring, a quick run to the hardware store was needed.

 

My indicator light occasionally goes out. I just look down on side of the engine case at the cast in gear numbers. Just kidding but I’ve wondered why Yamaha puts them there.

Because not every bike is "one down, four up". And let's face it, men aren't exactly exalted for reading instructions.
