OK all you seasoned Sat Nav riders, have purchased a Garmin Streetpilot 3 for use in the car and bike.

Mounting it on a bike , there seems to be a world of mounts, so any suggestions, what have you tried and found that works.

On 'Bikerjohnny' site the mirror stem mount looks neat and secure and is on the free hand side should you need to press any buttons. Has any one used this and does it foul on full right hand lock with the screen?

The stem mount also looks neat that fastens in the middle of the yoke, again anyone tried it.

All suggestion gratefully received.

I liked mine on the left also, for the same reasons. RAM hardware in the vacant left mirror mount. Left hand operates the buttons anyway, with no cruise control. Then with the RAM arm, you can choose a variety of positions and angles.

Thanks rabbit, that stem mount looks really neat, the Touratech mount although expensive is well made (a friend Hogan 2085 on this site has one) and with that stem mount it is secure, well as it can be, where the ram mounts can be undone easily.

Its looking like the stem or mirror mount from Biker johnny so far.

Thanks all for the input.

I will be ordering the stem mount and touretech locking mount.

Rabbit-- the headset is already ordered off E-Bay as you have shown and hard wire kit, all I need to do now is assemble the whole lot when it arrives and work out how to use the Garmin, have been playing today with it and it got me to work!!, trouble is the car knows its way anyway

Thanks again

Teejay - you want to put it to the test, then visit the ring road around Paris or similar...I could have sworn the damn thing started talking faster as the junctions were only 10 yards apart..Lmao.
Enjoy - you'll never leave home without it when you suss it out.

BTW, the reason why I got a Powerlet adapter was threefold:

Power the Garmin

Got an adapter/lead to accept my Optimate = easy plug in for charging

Got an adapter/lead to charge my mobile phone. (Yeah, I can't charge the mobile and use the Garmin at the same time but at least it gives me an option)

Don't know what year bike you have but if you need the socket size please ask.

I have the Quest fitted by a ram mount, unobtrusive fairly cheap and excellent quality...
stef, have you a link for the ram mount. I too have a Quest and wondered how to mount it. My spare "hole" on the left is already taken up by the bar heaters and I'm not keen on the centre socket approch.

Did like the pics posted by afterburn, but there's no reference to them, so no idea what the mount is

The 60c/s with it's mini memory cards has my interest. does anyone know of a mount that would work on the FJR?

In San Diego, BAGSTR
I dunno Bagstr, that screen is pretty tiny for motorcycle use. I have a small one that size, I use on the dirtbike... but the units with larger screens are much nicer to use on the road bikes.

I use RAM mounts, for street and offroad, with great satisfaction. The Garmin mounts are useless for bicycles and motorcycles. My buddy tried them.

Garmin 60 c/s

Liquid,

So, you read the screen while you are riding? Is that good practice? The idea of using the unit for other applications, like hiking, is attractive, battery and all. I would use the unit like a map, which I consult while pulled over. Hauling a 2730 or whatever around doesn't appeal to me. too much like DVD player. Do the Iron Butt Crowd watch DVD's while they do the Interstate Thing?

Thanks for the info on RAM mounts.

Heck yeah! I don't plan routes on it while I'm riding, but the bigger screen models like 176C/276C/376C can give you a bunch of info in about the same time it takes to glance at the speedo.

For instance, when I come up behind a pickup truck on a lonely backroad, and the GPS shows I only have 0.8 miles until an intersection, I'll refrain from passing until after the intersection. Or my favorite - when I'm whistling down a straight road, and see a squiggly line off the path, I can try it out, and like a bird's eye view, see where/if it comes out.

IMHO, the 2720/2730s are too big without a bigger screen than the 176C/276C/376Cs mentioned above.

The 276C and 376C have nifty recharging LiIon batteries.

No DVDs, but the 376C does live, on-screen weather and plays .mp3s. It's pricey, though.

My RAM stuff and 76C on the dirt bike survive repeated enduros (and crashes)... you oughta see what a beating they take. :D
