I was looking at an 06 today and the welding on the sub-frame is well Very poor since it's Yamaha's top of range bike I,m not impressed I just hope it's one off.

I am not a welder, but what I've read is that what you see is the way they want it to look.
Something about it being Aluminum and that it remains stronger if it isn't grinded down smooth.

All of them look alike as far as I have seen so far.

Again, this is out of my field but this is what I have heard on other sites.

Did the alignment for the production lines on a specialist glass factory in Cardiff, and the standard of welding on all the Japanese machinery was pretty poor. Like a flock of seagulls had been flying over it as one of the fitters put it. Mechanically it was sound(ish), but the cosmetic appearance left more than a bit to be desired.

It's not the raised weld that bothers me, the robot must have been on the :ale: the night before as it's all over the place and splatter every where.

I am a welder! :D Have been for life. (It SEEMS) You get what you pay for.ie: A $10 welder gets you a ten dollar weld. They don't care what it looks like and niether does a robot. There are a lot of butchers out there that fuse and splater s--t together.
Mark you are right about not grinding aluminum to maintain strengh. This is true for all welds. Just more so for aluminum. However if it is preped right and penetrated properly then the surface material can be removed. With aluminum weld cleanliness is of the uttmost importance to get a quality weld. When I am welding it by hand I can see impurities and float them out of the weld. I can also see if the weld has properly penetrated. If not I can stop, Grind clean and repair.
Welding done properly is an art. I learned from the old timers. It is a diying field( Or sould I say be killed) :p by butchers & robots.
Luckily my 05 seem to have desent welds. I could have done better :ale:

My 06 arrived last night along with the farkles (Joos the Techmount Sat Nav mount fits the 06 and looks fantastic) and after reading your post woody I had to check the welding lines and I'm pleased to let you know there ok, no sputter, no pin head gaps, just weld. Maybe the one you saw was a Friday bike...

Yes I know what you mean Woody I would have been gutted and they would have had it back today if it hadn't have been right.

Anyway, gave it a good run today, it's excellent.

If I have one complaint, it's that the painted cover over the screen mounting bracket on the front of the bike, seems to rattle?

Any idea's on how to stop it because it's going to drive me mad.... :x

Other than that everything works, fits and is really well finished

Goin out on me 03 in min , reckon its about run in now 14000 on clock. Bugger going to have to change clock to BST on it . Only changed it to winter time 3 weeks ago. Might just leave it.

Do enjoy your 06. Just mind how much its worth now to when you got it out of show room. That's the biggest shite of all.

So it's clipped on then?

I would take it off and put a very small amount of Silicon where the mounting points are and let it set, You should still be able to remove it.

Havent played with an 06 yet so only guessing.

Cheers Woody,

Yes it is clipped on and I used a couple of small drops of silicon as you said and it's fine, thanks.

See you soon,

Nova
