FJR Seat options

19520 Views 65 Replies 37 Participants Last post by  Borregofjrman
I just bought my 2nd FJR. Had 2008 with Sargent seat. Thinking about Corbin and have it cut down a little for a lower feel. I would like a higher nose on the seat and more bucket in the back. Any thoughts or preferences on all the seat choices.

Thanks

My first RDL wasn't as good as the 2nd. The reason? Not enough detail in the first order. They ask for 1 photo and some details. I did only that much the first time. The next one I sent many picks of me on the bike from different angles as well as more detail in what *didn't fit* on the OEM seat. That included pressure points knee angle, etc.
Russell Day Long Saddle - Ride in Service

I'm sold on the Day Long Saddle https://day-long.com/. Russell's offers a ride in service. You make an appointment and show up in the morning. They have you sit on your bike and see how you fit with the existing saddle. Then they find out what you want changed, what kind of cover you want, embroidery, etc. They will make a new foam seat bed and have you sit on it to check the fit. When you are happy with the fit, they will make the seat cover to your specifications. By the end of the day you have a new saddle that is guaranteed to not be what limits how long you ride. The have a 500 mile break in, and will make adjustments if any are needed. They are located in northern California and there are some great rides in the area. I've ridden down from the Seattle area and had them make saddles for my last three bikes.

I just got my seat back from Seat Concepts. Really like the wider butt section and lower seating position.
how hard to install? I was looking at the website...looks like I would have to install it on my own pan?
Mcompton197,

They only charge $25 for installation. I just boxed mine up and sent it to them.

I like the way the front looks, what is that ugly bubble in the passengers seat?
I have found a guy in Richmond who will take stock seat and cut it down, add memory or gel and give you options on covers. I will give him a try. I will probably use the existing cover or skin and cut down the seat 1 to 1 1/4 inch. I will let everyone know the outcome. If it doesn't improve the ride I am back to buying something else.

That is just the reflection of my shop lights, no bubble there.
Have a 2016 FJR1300ES. The stock seat is worse than any seat I have had previously. Just ordered the Sargent World Sport Performance PLUS (with DTX material) seat today. Will report back later when I get it.

Fjrjimbo, have you ridden any distance/time on you seat concepts seat ? The reason I ask is that I believe (no experience with that seat) that the seam on the top of the rider seat will provide a very sore spot for sitting any length of time. Good looking seat but a smooth seating surface is a requirement in my opinion.

My Corbin on my 80 cbx has piping that hits on the back of my legs, easily the most uncomfortable seat i’ve ever used. Best I have ever done on this seat was 180mi and had trouble getting off of the bike and walking after, terrible seat. Anyway I was just wondering how your seat concepts seat works.

I am looking forward to the comfort of my Top Sellerie gel seat when I do my Iron Butt ride this summer... link included for those who want to see it (I so hate trying to embed photos with my posts)

Had a Sargent on my 08 for 55K and moved it to the 14. I find it a pretty good seat. Been to Key West and back twice on it and butt held up fine. When I first got the seat I found that the edges from the seat pocket toward the front were a little too sharp for my liking. Sent the front back to them and they trimmed down those edges to a more rounded profile and it has been great ever since.

I also had them rebuild a Corbin seat for my K100RS and it was the best seat ever. Put a little over 200,000 miles on that seat on two differernt K100's before I sold the Beemers.

I like a harder seat versus softer. Just my .02.
As an alternative, I just put a sheep skin on the original seat. Did some 500-600 km days, no problem.
I'm 5'8" - 29" inseam ... what seat do you recommend for a lower seat height? I can touch the slap with my toes only with STD OEM seats, but I need flat foot stability. Read in this thread after market seats have little to no give in reducing padding for lowering purposes.

What's up with Yamaha..? Surely they're aware many riders can't flat foot slap with STD OEM
seats, why not re-design seat frame to accommodate shorter folks. They're missing a huge chunk of the market here and abroad.

Thanks for your input.

Laam Custom Seats (Seth Laam) just shipped my seat back to me yesterday and it should arrive on Wednesday. I'm 5' 7" and 180 lbs. and he said he would be able to reduce the seat height by about 1". Most of the reviews of his seats are very positive and I'm looking forward to trying it.
I also got a pair of Daytona M-Star GTX boots (lightly used from Ebay) for less than 1/2 price of new and they also added some extra "reach" for me plus they are an excellent quality boot.

My first, and most serious question is, WHY? Flat footing is over rated.

Topsellerie.com makes a lowered version of the seat as an option.....
Rather than start a new thread, I'll see if I can rekindle this one.
I have 2 FJRs, The first one I've ridden 100,000 on a Sargeant seat. I agree that it looks the nicest and is more comfortable than stock. As someone else stated, it's a 250 miles seat. Most of my rides are this length or longer and around the 300 mile mark, my backside feels like Ive been sitting on nails for several hours.

The second FJR I purchased came with a Corbin seat. I hated it from the start mostly because it rides way to low for me but also because it feels like I am sitting in a large toilet bowl.

I read all the threads on seats, and have my opinions... the Corbin is the lowest seat, just needs you to remove the cover and add a layer of padding because they are hard. Normally, my unspoken advice is, OK these guys try all the different seats and get the best compromise, but I'd just skip to the end and get the Russell...... that is, if you can handle it being a 1/2" higher than all the others, but truly the most comfortable all day long.
I like the idea of a taller ride height myself. So I may be in the market for a Russell. I've seen one once a decade ago and didn't care for the appearance. But, I just spent some time on their website and am interested. However, none of their pictures state what material is shown. The hardest chouce I would be making is deciding on material. What is stock material or material other aftermarket seats made from. I always assumed leather but the more I think of it, that's probably mistaken.

I've had 4 Corbin seats and hated them all. I've had 2 Sargent seats and I like them, but still rode with an Airhawk on longish rides.
I bought my 2011 FJR with stock seats and used the Airhawk for awhile, then happened on a Seat Concepts deal and went that route.

I don't like the looks of the Rusell or the Laam, so it was this or the Yamaha comfort seats for me. I also get pretty pissy (triggered) when someone suggests that we should all spend immense amounts of money (because they did) and buy the same seat they have, because... because it works well for them.
In my opinion, that's terribly short-sighted, and frankly, not very intelligent.

News flash: Humans come in a lot of different sizes and shapes.

It works well for me, YMMV.
Took the words right out of my mouth!

Seat Concepts is the budget seat that is pretty decent. Buy the cover and foam kit and install it yourself. Put the kit out in the sun to get nice and hot and have an air stapler. If you ever needed to modify it a bit, remove the cover and use an angle grinder to reshape the foam a bit to tweak it. I personally wouldn't get the grippy cover and opt for the carbon fiber vinyl top.
I still love my Seth Laam Custom seat. It transformed my riding life!! I suffer from "Transitional Lumbar Vertebrae." I am being somewhat facetious and sarcastic, as I really don't "suffer" from it...

I have an extra vertebrae in my Lumbar region. Because of this, I can get lower back pain, for no reason. It just happens. It goes as fast as it comes.

But the stock saddle killed me!! After about 15-20 minutes, the burning in my lower back and butt bone was so effing bad, I HAD to get off and stand for 15 minutes!

Once I got my custom Seth Laam saddle... OMFG... what a difference!! I can ride for hours now, and I never notice my lower back, butt bone, or even the saddle! I just ride and enjoy!!

It is a time investment to get one done, but so well worth it!! And his cost is so reasonable!!
