FJR Seat options

19522 Views 65 Replies 37 Participants Last post by  Borregofjrman
I just bought my 2nd FJR. Had 2008 with Sargent seat. Thinking about Corbin and have it cut down a little for a lower feel. I would like a higher nose on the seat and more bucket in the back. Any thoughts or preferences on all the seat choices.

Thanks

When I bought my used 2011 FJR a couple years ago, it came with a "custom seat" with a strange black mesh covering on the seat, and I had no idea what it was, but it was comfortable. No monkey butt, no shifting around for comfort every fifteen minutes, etc. Very breathable and comfortable on hot days and cold days. Pretty "temperature neutral." Mrs. likes it, too.

I think I've finally figured out that it's a KonTour polar mesh seat customization that the PO had installed. It looks like they take your stock seat (only stock, no aftermarkets) and customize it with new foam, a weatherproof cover, and the polar mesh material. For the two-piece FJR seats, as near as I can figure, it would be under $500 (just for driver section) and around $800 (for driver section and pillion).

It's also an entirely different look, somewhat exotic, and an interesting alternative to consider for those with the inclination to try it.

Crap....another seat to try... :wink2: I've not heard of these guys, and the seat sounds interesting. Maybe some day I'll get the opportunity to meet up with someone who has one. Interesting.... O well, RDL for me!
Thanks for all the responses. I am still leaning Corbin. My problem is height. 5'8". Stock seat at lowest position is still too high. Corbin seems lower on my friends FJR. The biggest mystery is buying a seat or windshield and you will not know for several test runs.
Thanks again
Do your feet reach the pegs? Then you're good. All that matters is when the tires are rolling and if you are then comfortable.

Corbin (for me) is worse than factory as far as miles between pain. I'd rather scoot over to get a foot down than be uncomfortable after only 100 - 150 miles.
You guys freak me out - if I was to ride 1200 miles east I would end up in Moscow!

The Sargent is the best looking and sleekest seat I've owned. It was also as hard as an aluminum bleacher. For comfort, I'd look elsewhere.
Bill - do I remember correctly, from another post, that you went from Sargent to Laam? I've got the Sargent, and manage on it, but "wouldn't mind" something with a little more give.

Thanks

I think you would end the test ride in Poland or Lithuania. Nice ride though:)

I went from the Yamaha Comfort to the Laam,
but I've used a Sargent. The Sargent was rock hard.
Easy to move on, slightly more saddle shaped than the stock seat,
but hard and uncomfortable. The Yamaha comfort seat was much,
much more comfortable than the stock seat (or the Sargent),
and I could easily have used it for the rest of the time I owned the bike. The Laam was another big step up in comfort,
but I will admit, it was mostly curiosity that led me to order a Laam,
as I was not unhappy with the Yamaha comfort seat.

This whole thread explains why yammyha continues to put that awful seat as oe on the fjr,,,, so many arse’s, too many options.....sorry but I went the bill Lumberg route with a Yamaha comfort seat (good for me about 350mi.) to a Laam, same money as the comfort seat but much much better, but did make it difficult to put my feet down (30in inseam) and caused me to drop my bike at a stop light, wet pavement and off camber. But I used some adjustable lowering links to drop the bike 1/2”, enough to get me flat footed, may go a bit more this summer.

Before I retired the ride to work was 43mi each way and the oe seat was about all I could tolerate, they could do better, I think anyone that works on the design team should have to ride a minimum of 1k on it before they can sign off on their proposed end bike. Yamaha keeps doing some significant upgrades but they keep the same pos seat, just my opinion.
Saddleman Stealth Seat anyone?
I had a saddleman on another bike. It wasn't the stealth. It also wasn't good for much beyond show-and-shine (looks). Another attempt (by me) to avoid spending money on a good seat (which to me is the Russell - 3 bikes and counting since getting the first Russell).
All this talk about seats - particularly those seen here and elsewhere about the Yamaha Comfort Seat - and pondering a long trip in a few months, prompted some searching, and I came across this:

Note that it says - "expected release date is January 13th, 2018" - which made me wonder: if this something new, or a new version, or maybe just the date they will have it available? Comments from those who have or have had the Comfort Seat would be welcome!

I don't do gel seats. They get way too hot and hold the heat, a sure recipe for monkey butt here in the heat of a Florida summer.

Not a bit hotter than any other black seat. I had one for a while. There is a new version of the Yamaha Comfort seat. I don’t know if it’s better or worse, or just looks different. I have run 1k mile plus days on the stock seat (never again), the comfort (pretty damned good), and the laam (heaven- the last mile was as comfortable as the first). I’d like to try an RDL but I just don’t have anything to fix.

Bill,

For you..... you are probably on line with the thinking of a Corbin....... for 2 reasons: 1) height accomodation and 2) it comes on its own seat pan. If you try it and change your mind, someone will take it off your hands.

I haven't received my 18 yet but when I do I will give the stock seat its normal break in period but if it comes down to upgrading (and I'm guessing it will), I wont hesitate..... I will "invest" in a RDL. I had one on a 1150 GS years ago and was able to ride from Toronto, out to western Canada, up to Alaska, around Alaska and back home. I need no convincing for an an RDL, other than selling one of my kidneys to buy it.

It would be interesting to know if anyone has an RDL AND lowered the bike........

Just installed and gave a 20 mile test ride on a Seat Concepts refit, initial impression is very good not even factoring the $200 entry point. For the budget conscious,it is a great option. Will be selling front portion of the Yamaha Comfort Seat option.
I have Laam currently, and as stated a great seat. I also still have the Yamaha comfort seat that I bought to replace the awful oe seat. The comfort seat is pretty good and I can do about 350mi easily, my critique of it is that the gel pad should’ve been larger because I sit on the edges which really creates discomfort, did not initially notice that but did the last long trip I did. Also the gel pad does absorb and keep heat which is the downside of gel, good otherwise, and a good looking piece as well.

I use the comfort seat when I take the bike into the dealerbecause it easier to fix/replace than my Laam.
Mine was part number ADA-2D221-10-00. Whole seat felt the same, no edges of any pad, just a smooth contoured saddle. I know there have been at least two, if not three iterations of the Comfort seat. Like you, I use a factory seat I have lying around for when the bike is serviced by someone else.

I just got my seat back from Seat Concepts. Really like the wider butt section and lower seating position.

I would like a higher nose on the seat and more bucket in the back.

Thanks
I bought a Russell Day Long for my FJR after having one on an FJ1200. Great seat IMO, but if you want a higher nose, I would suggest that you call them and ask what they can do about that.
The RDL I had on the FJ, probably due the original design of that seat and pan, provided a good rise in the front.
I mentioned this to Russell when I ordered the seat for the FJR, as I liked the front rise; but the seat I received doesn't really rise in the front. Otherwise, I like the seat for comfort and the quality build.

My point is that if you decide on a RDL, I would communicate very clearly that the rise in front is important to you and see what they say. In my case, I mentioned it in passing, but didn't make a point of it.
