FJR Seat options

19522 Views 65 Replies 37 Participants Last post by  Borregofjrman
I just bought my 2nd FJR. Had 2008 with Sargent seat. Thinking about Corbin and have it cut down a little for a lower feel. I would like a higher nose on the seat and more bucket in the back. Any thoughts or preferences on all the seat choices.

Thanks

Hmmm, that subject hasn't come up. :wink2:
I read all the threads on seats, and have my opinions... the Corbin is the lowest seat, just needs you to remove the cover and add a layer of padding because they are hard. Normally, my unspoken advice is, OK these guys try all the different seats and get the best compromise, but I'd just skip to the end and get the Russell...... that is, if you can handle it being a 1/2" higher than all the others, but truly the most comfortable all day long.

Don't get (another) Sargent if your intention is to trim it down for a lower stance. The "hidden" box compartment below precludes any such trimming as the vertical depth isn't that great to begin with. I'm not a seat expert, but I spoke to one about my Sargent...had a discussion about subtly reshaping and *adding* foam to my new Sargent for a less firm ride, and the idea was shot down by Spencers (greatdaytoride.com), who said that box underneath makes his ability to trim foam a nonstarter as it's too thin from top to bottom in that area.
The Sargent is the best looking and sleekest seat I’ve owned. It was also as hard as an aluminum bleacher. For comfort, I’d look elsewhere.

Check Craigslist and eBay. Just scored a set of Rich's custom seats for the rider and pillion for $270 shipped.

Made for a heavier rider like me too!

How is this for a "butt pocket" that's nice and low?

Feels great!

I have a Corbin on mine and am happy with it. Keeps me from sliding the gonads into the tank, is firm but not hard and looks good imo. I'm happy with it, a huge improvement of the stock seat and usually can go fill up to fill up without that squirm.
Dance around, try options, save money, use band aids on those not-quite-as-expensive "custom" seats. Then get a Russell like you should have to begin with.

Curious if you had to modify your passenger seat to fit that?
Getting ready to send seat off for a Russell and wondering if I should go with a Russell drivers backrest or something else like a utopia I live in northwestern Ohio so if anyone is close I would really like to get a feel for it before throwing out the cash

These seats were built on a 2005 FJR1300 seat pans. Slap right on!

I'm in Seattle and wanted to support a local custom seat shop.>:)

If you are an "Active" rider who moves around on twisties and sweepers the wings on the RDL seats don't work for you. Tried one and felt trapped.
I am really enjoying my TopSellerie seat (France).... top notch finish and really comfortable on the long rides. Check out their website for all the possibilities. They have multiple setups (with heat or not). From the time to order and receiving my seat, I believe it took about 3 or 4 weeks. They are worth considering if you are shopping for a better seat than the OEM. www.topsellerie.com
My point of view on Corbin’s is that I have 2 on my 80 & 81 cbx’s, the 81 seat is probably the best seat I have ever used next to my Seth Laam and holds my personal longest day record of 730mi with 675mi on the Laam and was easier on the Laam, could’ve gone a lot farther easily, the Corbin was at the end. The Corbin is very hard.

Now the Corbin on my 80 is easily the worst seat i’ve Ever used, it is a beautiful to look at seat but maybe a 130mi seat tops, terrible. I’ll add that unless something has changed in the last 10yrs their customer service is probably the worst i’ve ever dealt with maybe tied with Colorite for being the worst. Not buying anything from Corbin, a lot of great ideas come from them just very poor customer service and execution.

That's irritating, Rich built me a seat with even less hip support than yours but claimed he need modify the passenger seat to do so and charged me $300, or ripped me off for lack of a better term.
I have a Corbin and have had them for 15 years. They are firm but comfortable and you sit in it rather than on it.
The only problem is that they are only available in the UK in leather. I had to have mine recovered in vinyl to stop sliding forward.

Funny, but as the FJR is extremely popular outside the US - I have parts from UK, Italy and Russia on my bike.

I think that French company also makes some nice leather tank bras too. Couple people like their seats.

I've had 4 Corbin seats and hated them all. I've had 2 Sargent seats and I like them, but still rode with an Airhawk on longish rides.
I bought my 2011 FJR with stock seats and used the Airhawk for awhile, then happened on a Seat Concepts deal and went that route.

I don't like the looks of the Rusell or the Laam, so it was this or the Yamaha comfort seats for me. I also get pretty pissy (triggered) when someone suggests that we should all spend immense amounts of money (because they did) and buy the same seat they have, because... because it works well for them.
In my opinion, that's terribly short-sighted, and frankly, not very intelligent.

News flash: Humans come in a lot of different sizes and shapes.

On a recent 350 mile ride, I was surprised the S.C. seat did so well. I moved around once or twice to get more comfortable, but it allows me to move around and change pressure points easily. At the end of the day, I wasn't thinking about the seat, and that's a big deal to me.

It actually did better than expected- I had put S.C. on my Yamaha WR450 and felt like it was a lot of money wasted- still felt like sitting on a 4x6, but I decided to give it a try on the FJR because.. it's a different bike and a different shape.
It works well for me, YMMV.

A couple of years ago I just said F*** t and started making my own. If you need your seat look look perfectly professional on an FJR you might be on the wrong bike.
Tried a Sargent, it was a bench. Beautiful and looked great, but was a 250 mile or less seat. Bought a Laam off a fellow here (similar body type, somewhat), and that was a much better seat. I think of that was as a 1k mile seat. But multiple 1200 mile days caused me issues, though the seat itself was pretty comfortable. So now I’m moving on the the Russel. It doesn’t look great, but from what I hear, multiple high miles back to back should be proper. And for me, I just wanna eat, sleep and ride....so I gotta go the Russell route :). Oh, I tried the stock again today and after 50 miles, my arse started to hurt... but again, that’s my body type... :)
