My wife's boots used to touch the exhaust pipe often, leaving black marks on it. I carried a small amount of Easy Off oven cleaner in a small plastic bottle on multi-day trips to take care of the marks. All I needed to do is to dab a bit of cleaner on the black spot in the evening, and next morning wipe it off with a paper towel. No steel wooling or rubbing was necessary.
