Carpuride first impression and questions

Rode the FJR for the first time today-post elbow surgery-still have a ways to go before I can comfortably ride.

Played with the new Carpuride 502 for the first time…a few thoughts and questions

DISCLAIMER….I am not a tech genius

Iam using the apple auto play feature and a Cardo Packtalk slim. The Cardo unit pairs to my helmet and I can use some of the Carpuride features by using Siri. When I check my phone it says the Carpuride unit is not connected ???? The Cardo unit functions normally. One of the issues I have with the Carpuride is at road speed when it reads incoming texts the audio is so quite I can’t hear them. Directions from either Apple Maps or Google maps is barely audible. Not sure if I have things paired right or if Iam making sense any help would be great.

I bought the 502 partly because of its size (I thought ) and it was cheaper than the 702 it would be nice if it was a tad bigger though

Sounds like a pairing issue. you must first pair your phone to the Carpuride unit. Then pair your unit to your headset. Make sure the headset is disconnected from the phone.

I went from a W502 to the W702. The bigger screen helps these old eyes. Reminds me I gotta put the 502 up for sale here. And yes, a 6 inch model would be perfect.

I may have it backwards. Regardless I think the issue is having the headset connected to both the Carpuride and your phone at the same time.

I don’t think my Cardo is connected to the Carpuride. When I turn the Cardo on it goes through the sequence like it did prior to the Carpuride and says it’s paired to the phone. When I look on the phone it shows the cardo unit is connected to the phone and the Carpuride unit is not connected to the phone. Other than the low volume on text and directions the Carpuride seems to work fine …I may be over complicating things or just confused

Sounds like you need to pair everything up again like I stated in post #2. If you want to use the headset controls then yes pair that to the phone. There may be a setting in your phone that does not allow automatic blue tooth pairing of the Carpuride. I know mine pairs every time I power it up.

I didn't like that my blue tooth ear buds died so quickly and I thought the sound quality could have been better. So today I'm actually installing a BT to aux converter. I'll pair my phone to the Carpuride. Then the audio out of the Carpuride will get paired to this converter unit. Then I can just plug my corded ear buds into that. Hopefully sound quality will improve as well as I don't have to worry about BT ear buds dying in the middle of a trip.

Also refer to the owners manual on how to adjust the volume on the unit if you decide to route your audio out thru that.

there’s controls for music and voice

Appreciate reviews such as this one.

Does the sun shade on the 502 work pretty well @Griff557 ? How is the screen brightness? Would you consider it "sunlight readable," either with or without the shade?

One reason I've begun to consider a standalone nav/audio unit such as the subject one is, my phone is not sunlight-readable, even at maximum brightness. It is a struggle to read it on our many very sunny days, especially when the sun is directly overhead.

The screen is very bright I think the sunscreen probably helps as well. I didn’t have any issues seeing the screen like I do on my phone. Like I said earlier the 502 is a tad small I have it mounted with a ram ball using the “mirror” mount on the left handle bar the 702 might interfere with a tank bag and be too big to mount this way ? A 6” unit would be perfect

Thanks for the advice. So you’re saying the volume on the texts and directions is louder when paired like you suggest? Maybe I’ll have to try pairing things again.
Watch the video in post #7, the guy talks about this exact situation.

I’ve seen the music/volume control on the unit-they appear to have a max setting of 40
That's really just a scale of 40 increments the volume can be adjusted. If it went to 100 it doesn't mean it would be 2 and a half times louder.

I happened to watch that video before I bought the unit and paired it-I watched it again and his problem was with the sound quality of phone calls and music I didn’t hear him mention anything about the volume of voice directions or the volume of incoming texts that are read over the system. I believe I have mine paired the way the video explains it. Been busy the last couple days I’ll review the video again and try re-pairing the units

Today I tweaked how the Carpuride was mounted. I also paired the Carpuride to the Blue Tooth to Aux adapter. I can now use my wired ear buds and not worry about them running out of juice halfway thru the day. It works excellent. The sound quality and volume was incredible.

Here's the BT to Aux adapter. It's paired to the audio out of the Carpuride and I just plug my ear bud cord into it.

These 2 shots are how the Ram ball was mounted to the Advalp bracket...

I eliminated that cross piece on the Advalp bracket and moved the Ram ball directly to it, back about 2 inches bringing the Carpuride closer to the wind shield...

The cockpit as it stands now...

The 7 inch Carpuride still looks huge in pics but it's not really intrusive to my field of vision at all. I may consider moving it down between the bars if I can get a steering nut ball mount.

EDIT: I just realized I can now remove the old wireless Ipod controller on the left handle bar.

Sooooo I may have solved my volume issue with directions and audio for incoming texts. I don’t think it had anything to do with the way I have the Carpuride/phone/Cardo paired it is paired the way the previously posted video says to do it using the Apple auto. I think the issue was with the settings on my phone. I went to the setting for Apple Maps and there is an option for the directions volume and I selected the loudest option. I also watched some videos for Apple Car play on vehicles and I know on my truck you can use the volume adjustment to increase/decrease the volume of directions while they are be announced. So I started a route on my phone and when the directions first began to be read I maxed the volume on my phone (I tried using the volume on the Cardo unit first and it didn’t work) I can now hear directions and audio for texts at road speed. I turned the Cardo off and on a couple times and the volume settings seem to stay the way I had them. The volume and audio quality for phone calls and music was never an issue so it seemed like more of a phone setting problem than a pairing problem to the Carpuride since all the audio comes from my phone and doesn’t go through the Carpuride. I’ll keep playing around with but for now I might have it figured out.

That may have been mentioned already, and it sounds like you solved the issue, but ...
I too use a Cardo Pak Talk slim and have been frustrated at volumes for different things. IE: Intercom, Phone, Cardo's AI voice comments / commands (IE: Battery 50%), radio, ... There are controls for different things in the Cardo app when opened on the phone. Adjusting settings from there helped a great deal.
FWIW and YMMV

Was reading the specs of the Carupuride W702. One of the diagrams shows a "5G chip."

I think they're referring to the WiFi capability, specifically WiFi 5 (802.11ac), which designates the maximum data rates you can expect.

I'm not real clear on what you do with the WiFi for on the Carpuride. Can it be used as a standalone Android tablet, for instance when off the bike?

I'm sure this would be covered in the user manual, but I haven't found a copy of that online yet.

Looking at the owners manual and it's pretty vague. Looks like after BT pairing to you phone there's a page that says "Turn on the Carpuride screen wifi". Then there's a couple of screen captures that say 1) iPhone searches and choose the wifi'carpuride-xxxx' to connect. 2) Then "Enter the password "666666" click join". And lastly "Connection successful".

I have no clue what that does. Similar but looks more complicated for Android.

Looks like all of my questions are going to get answered, because I bought @Whooshka 's W502.

I may have to order some other bits and pieces to sit it on the RAM ball on my Helibars riser. But that's where I'm going to try to put it. Same place my phone occupies at present.

5" is a little smaller than my phone's screen, but the Carpuride is much brighter, and comes with a sun shade, so I figured it was worth trying.

update: no, looks like the W502 comes with a RAM-like ball on the back, should be able to mount it right up where my QuickGrip XL has been. Sweet.

OSMAnd+ will completely lose track of my position when I go off the ceullar network sometimes.

it's not a problem with OSMAnd+ itself. I only see it in OSMAnd+ first. Same deal if I switch to Google Maps, or run an app that shows GPS/GLONASS/Galileo data directly (GPS Status app for example).

#33 ·
Exactly. Doesn't always happen, and I don't go off-network very often, so it's been extremely hard to replicate.

Turning off mobile data while otherwise within cellular coverage doesn't seem to have the same effect.
What make and model is you phone? I ask because my Galaxy Tab Active3 (tablet) works without network, and my Galaxy S10E has the same GPS abilities, although I never tried the phone off network.

Just trying to figure out what features are needed to use GPS out of network.

Nokia XR20. It's supposed to have similar nav tech to your Tab Active, plus QZSS and NavIC (Indian GNSS).

Try going off-network with your Tab Active 3 some time, you might be unpleasantly surprised, might not.

Went on a ride with some buddies several weeks ago, and we had a good hour or so segment with little to no cellular coverage. Phone couldn't find its position the whole time. Good thing we knew where we were going, and there was really only one paved road to follow.

I've been through that area before with that phone, as well as with older phones, but they didn't stop tracking position. So I have no idea what's going on.

It's not a loss of GPS signal. My dashcam GPS never stopped tracking.

I dug into the specs for your Nokia and under GPS it says:
GPS: Yes, A-GPS, GLONASS, GALILEO

The Galaxies showed GPS, Glonass, BeiDou, Galileo

I have no idea what is what or what is the best to have for off-grid. Just gathering data.

That's what I am saying. My tablet doesn't even have a sim card. Zero network...ever. It routes just like a Garmin. Pick a destination, tell it to navigate and head out. Take a wrong turn and it recalculates.
I was doing that where my phone had zero bars.

OSNAnd+ should do that for you as well, provided you have the maps stored for that area and your phone GPS does not require network to function.

From the OsmAnd+ site:
"OsmAnd+ is an offline world map application based on OpenStreetMap (OSM), which allows you to navigate taking into account the preferred roads and vehicle dimensions. Plan routes based on inclines and record GPX tracks without an internet connection. "

Yes, ideally GPS should not require mobile data to function.

A-GPS devices unfortunately can have no meaningful standalone capability. Implementations vary. It depends on the device.

The inconsistent behavior makes it hard to figure out what's going on. Sometimes the phone will keep updating position when off-network, sometimes it won't.

Your Tab Active 3 is always "off-network," if it doesn't have any cellular capability. I suspect you also see no difference when not connected to WiFi (ideally, you wouldn't).

#37 ·
My tablet only connected to WiFi at home for updating purposes.
So, I take back what I said about using an alternative mapping app, since I've learned that not all phones have the type of GPS needed to run it off network.
Nonetheless, the Carpuride should give you the improved visibility that you are looking for while your phone stays safely in your pocket. GPS ability will be as it always has been.
I look forward to reading your review once you get some time on it. :)

It's a big head-scratcher that I've been through that exact area before - some time last year, with the same Nokia XR20 - but I don't remember it losing its way then.

Maybe I wasn't using OSMAnd+ that time? It's possible, as I know the route well. I only have the "directions" loaded so I know how far along I am, and roughly when I can expect to arrive home.

In any event, I'm stoked about a screen that is actually usable in sunlight. "Bright and sunny" is almost every day of riding here for me.

Because USPS sat on it for an extra day or two for no obvious reason, I don't have my W502 yet. Supposedly, later today.

In the meantime:

Is it the case that the Carpuride units have no built-in battery of any kind, so they need a constant 12V power supply?

It looks that way, as there's no battery mentioned in the manual, or any charging procedure mentioned.

Not necessarily a bad thing, if true. I can think of ways to power the W502 off-bike if needed.

Damn, it was supposed to be to you Saturday.

There is no battery. I have mine hardwired to the battery. But there is also a cable that you could plug into a USB port.

No biggie...and totally USPS' fault.

Got it today, thanks!

It's raining a lot this week, but that's OK, give me plenty of time to set the thing up and get all my gear situated. I'm using the USB power supply cable while indoors.

An aspect I didn't see covered elsewhere: Carpuride's mounting hardware is a perfect match for a RAM 1" ball system. So if you have that already, which I did, it'll mount right up.
