I realized my boating days were over after I got bad news from a skin biopsy.
Informed to avoid direct sunlight, wear sunblock,& sun blocking clothes.. this really changed my lifestyle.
Our timeshare in Cancun became an exercise in pretending to be a vampire..good thing we only had a few yrs. left on the timeshare. Has cut back drastically on my m/c riding as well. Now I'm limiting myself to much shorter rides, riding early morning, or in the evening, after sun's going down.
Another one of those, wish I'd taken better care of myself changes. :(

I don't drown myself in pity,I'm thankful & blessed to remain among the living..know too many that aren't here anymore. Grateful I can still do what I do, as well as I can still do it.😁
Good luck with that all. My dad has had a ton of stuff removed over the years, but still goes out golfing with the bald head to the sun. Old dogs, new tricks .

I had a small melanoma removed from my back last year with the same advice as you list. I don't find MC riding difficult though as my body is fully covered by clothes, helmet etc. I do put on SPF 50 in my face (and hands in case I don't wear gloves) before I go riding. I don't do beaches anymore though...

if you have had a melanoma, you understand my caution..I've tried ( it seems) every sunblock on the market & all cause my eyes to burn like crazy. I put it on indoors. Then wait for it to dry, or absorb into my skin. When I go out for a ride, I eventually start sweating & the sunblock runs down into my eyes.. making them burn & water copiously. I have purchased some Columbia sunblocker "fishing" shirts that are extremely light weight, cool & comfortable. Good looking enough that I wear them to church.. Wish I could find a sunblock that didn't run into my eyes, as doesn't seem to be a way for me NOT to sweat, in summer heat & humidity. Almost forgot to ask, you do see your dermatologist annually for a visual body check, looking for any more lesions ?

Try this stuff. Wife swears by it - she is about as blonde and fair skinned as you can get without being a ginger ;)

Nah, I stick with boats that have no wood in them. Spent 6 months rebuilding our first boat, never again.
I redid an old scow in the early 90s (i think) Fun project cuz nothing had to be perfect. i got all done then realized the wood inside the transom was rotted. We made 2 aluminum plates & bolted it all together & used the heck outa it for yrs. The poor old thing is sitting up at the cabin in the back yard with 3" trees growing outa the floor. Perfectly good 75hp evinrude ruined by mice.

I also struggle with sunscreen burning my eyes when I go running or biking - but when I ride my MC I don't put it above my eyes since I am wearing a helmet. Problem solved. My dermatologist recommended visiting every 4 months for two years and then back to annual checkups if nothing more is found. So far so good.

My son's Father-in law likes boats, power & sail. Seems every time I see him, he's had more skin cut off his face..& I see him often. Don't know if he wears sunblock, or if it's too late for the issues he has. At least his lesions aren't melanoma, ( not so far).. and he's several years younger than I am.

Have the 3 good/done pieces sitting and curing a while before I do a wetsand on the clearcoat and then apply the stickers. The seat cowl needed a little filler, that is almost done. The front side panels, one of them is getting resanded because the epoxy primer must not have been mixed enough - was the first panel I did. The tank and front fairing are next, fairing still needs to be skimmed with filler and sanded where I jigsaw puzzled it back together.

Starting to look like something. Still a lot of work left to go.

Starting to realize that I probably could have just clear coated the primer. There is very little difference between Yamaha pure silver and Samurai epoxy primer.

Since the paint doesn't come until next week. $150 worth of Craigslist 200cc Chinese dirt bikes.

Got the last of the initial primer done last night. Luckily I ordered 4 cans of the epoxy primer (need some for the Benley) 2 of them were junk and I'll have to send back. Going to be insanely hot for a few days, so I'll wet sand them and then likely have to wait to color/clear unless I can get the shop under 75 for a couple days.

Meanwhile, went through the dirt bikes. One of them kicks over on the key, the wiring in the other one is a nightmare and didn't do anything even when jumping the solenoid. So took all the good parts from the one and put them on the other and cleaned out the carb. Waiting on some fuel line and a start/stop/starter pod and then will make sure it wants to run.

I'll give you this..you must really enjoy bringing old bikes back to life..but chinese bikes ?
that's a another level of challenges !
LOL. Easier than pretty much anything. Say what you will about the Chinese, the stuff will run on bacon grease after you leave it sitting outside for 5 years.

..." Easier than pretty much anything. .. what about parts availability ?
Lawn mower and generator parts. Seriously. The tank petcock I needed was the spare I keep for my Briggs generator.

Sitting around in the office now waiting to cure for 3-5 days. Still dealing with Yamaha stormy red. Apparently a tri coat, which is super weird for 1985. May just leave all the stuff that should be red silver. Looks nice and this isn't a high buck restoration.
