I have a 2018 ES with a dead battery. I jumped the bike with cables hooked directly to the battery. After it started the check engine light was on, solid.

I have ridden it three times now and it has stayed on. Called my local shop and they charge 30$ to pull the codes. They also told me if the light is on, its still an active code and something is wrong with the bike.

I have searched the web, and it seems my only options are to have the code read. I have seen people put together their own plug and reader, but that isn't an option for me right now.

Does this sound right or is my dealer looking to pull a fast one on me? My bike is still under warranty and was purchased new in Dec, 12mo warranty.

True, the only way to access the codes is with the adapter and OBD reader... I have heard of a couple of dealers who reset the codes no charge, but hey, it's labour time and I wouldn't do it for free either unless you were a good customer I make money from in other service.....
But, go get yourself that harness and reader... as you've found, it pays for itself first time.
Do not know the circumstances of your dead battery, but there is a parasitic draw on the battery at all times while sitting..... got a Battery Tender?

I do not know what code/CEL would be set from jumping the bike.... perhaps get the code from the dealer when he reads it and let us know. Keep us posted.

whereabouts are you, i have a adapter and reader in the SE twin cities.

or if the dealer can get you in, $30 doesn't seem terrible for their time and effort

That is not true. A CEL remains forever after an event in the belief that something happened that you need to know about. If the light automatically extinguished then the firmware engineer has no way of knowing you ever saw the light.

Can put the bike on centerstand, start engine, spin rear wheel in gear, and cause the CEL to illuminate for months until one breaks down and purchases an OBD-II adapter pigtail on eBay to attach a standard OBD-II scanner to clear the code.

Depends on the code...... CEL can reset itself in certain conditions as the "fault" is corrected. However, the FJR has triggered CEL's also where the condition corrected itself and remained lit. No way of knowing if the fault is active or just stored from the event, not really determinable until that code is known.
Doesn't really matter, you have to take it in to clear it, but do find out what code triggered it.

What fault will the FJR CEL then automatically reset the CEL after the fault has passed?

Think we should distinguish between pre-2016 and the 2016+ OBD-II ECU.

Hey guys, sorry for checking back in so late. This have been crazy at the shop. I will have to look into a scan tool then. I start browsing on here to see what I come up with.


Yes the bike was plugged in to a tender, but the key was left on by the kids...or me probably!


If I have time to run to the dealer tomorrow I will get it scanned and report back with the code that was thrown. This is my first bike in a long while so it will be good to establish a relationship with them.

So I stopped in and the tech was doubtful he would be able to clear anything with the scan, but he did. All lights are now off and as they should be.

Here is a screen shot of the codes that were still in the system. Its a 2018 that I purchased "new" from them. It had 1200 miles on it when I got it, so I assume it was dropped once as I have never had it on its side.

I did have issues with the cruise control, and only a full stop, turn off, and restart bike would fix. It never flashed the CEL, but the cruise light would flash.

What do you make of the rest of the codes that were stored in it at the time of scan?

Cruise issues most likely related to clutch or brake lever switches not fully returning, but odd at such low mileage. Lean angle sensor, kills bike if over 65 degrees, resets with an ignition cycle, will store a code.
However, a couple of strange things have triggered CEL on 2016 up, so who knows if it was leaned over or not.... one could check for damage to exhaust or bottom of saddlebags/front fairings/mirrors, if none, then move on....
