A 10 Year Hiatus

Hello all,
In 2012 I bought a 2008 FJR AE from an older gentleman that put 28 miles on it. Great guy, flawless bike. I'd just taken a severance package at work so I gathered up some gear and rode to Ocean City, MD on a test run. All good after that short hop so I took off for Montana. Made it to South Dakota and ran into a group of riders checking in at a hotel, they informed me that 212 into Montana was closed due to fires. Rode down to Wyoming the next morning and toured around, decided to head back home to MD to find a job and get on with life. Hindsight tells me I should have stayed out there and enjoyed the trip but the lack of income was weighing on my mind at the time. I got home in one piece and sold the FJR as I have a couple of other bikes.

I've always thought about that trip and remembered the good and bad experiences with a smile. Met some really kind people. Saw some guy messing with my bike when I came out of the hotel one morning, Harley rider that had parked next to me in the lot was cleaning my windscreen with Plexus after doing his own. We talked for about 30 minutes, what a cool gesture and I thanked him. Saw a lot of the country, did some awesome riding, and found out ordering Chinese food delivery in South Bend, IN is a surefire way to have a jacked up stomach for 2 days. I also learned that wearing an Aerostich suit at the end of June into July can help you shed 10lbs. lol Yeah, I made a ton of mistakes but it was all good and it all worked out.

Fast forward to last Friday. I bought a 2023 FJR from a dealership in Hagerstown, MD. My work schedule is ridiculous and I've yet to ride it but will be taking it out on Sunday. I'm happy to be back and looking forward to some more trips and learning a lot on this forum. Just ordered a Garmin Zumo XT. Planning a route on that mystery contraption eluded me in 2012 so I ended up just picking a city that was about 400-500 miles away and setting that as my destination. End result was a majority of that trip was on the major highways versus the scenic roads, definitely want to do it the right way next time.

Glad to be here...

Great stories, and you chose another great bike!

Take some pics when you go up to Cumberland! Been a minute since I have seen Western Md.!

The speed limit on US90 in South Dakota was 75, IIRC. Everyone was doing 90mph. This little bastid hit me just to the left of the adam's apple. It felt like a Sea Gull.

Well, can’t blame you for getting another FJR! Looks like they’re including side cases with new models again. There was a supply chain shortage with em for a spell and would ship months later.

Are the heated grip controls in a different spot now?
Yeah it's amazing how much pain bugs can generate. June bugs in New Mexico felt like someone was throwing rocks at me!

The heated grips are controlled through the dash menu on this bike, there's no dedicated switch. I shopped the 2022's and yeah, they were bagless for the most part with all the dealers saying they'd mail them to me when they came in. Ironic, but I checked the bags on this bike when I first went to look at it. No liners. Sales guy said he didn't think the liners came with, so when I put a down payment on the bike and decided I was going to buy it, I ordered a set of liners from Yamaha. Last Friday when I picked it up, there was a set of liners in the right bag. Oh well. Returned the ones I ordered back to Yamaha.
Working on a Cox radiator screen, possible steering stem mount for the Garmin XT, which arrives tomorrow. I think I need the Garmin in hand to see if the Cox mount will work. If anyone has an XT and Cox steering stem mount, I'd love to hear your advice. They sell a short one and a long one.
Welcome back and congrats on your new ride. Enjoy! (y)
I put 50 miles on the bike on Saturday and got home just before some light rain arrived. Man, this was a GREAT purchase for me, personally. The first impression is that it feels more nimble than what I remember my old 2008 FJR being. The other, overwhelming bit of feedback is that this bike is smooth as hell. I love the motor. I usually adhere to break-in instructions from the manual so I kept the RPM's under 4,500 and did a lot of rolling on/off the throttle to vary the engine load. Even in touring mode there was plenty of torque low in the RPM range. Played with Touring and Sport modes, cruise control, and windscreen heights. I found nothing about this bike that I didn't like or love.

The entire ride I was thinking about all the cool trips I can be taking on this machine, grinning from ear to ear. Money well spent buying this bike, glad I finally went from "thinking about getting another FJR" to owning one!

Did the dealer Loktite the screws that retain the saddlebag locks? If not, you are in danger of losing part of your saddlebag on the road. You will need a #10 Security Torx bit to check. Harbor Freight sells an inexpensive set for less than $10.

I'll check that out, thanks for the heads up.
