I am trying to change the upper cowling on the bike, but the deeply buried screw accessed from the fork area has eluded me so far. Any suggestions on screwdriver size or type. According to the instructions and photos it is a Philips head. I am unable to make any contact with it regardless of the size screwdriver. It is hard to access and cannot be seen.

Can you provide a photo of the area where the screw is, that you are trying to access?

BTW, Japanese motorcycles use JIS (Japanese Industrial Standard) screws, so you do NOT want to use a Phillips screwdriver on them, if at all possible. ;)

Here's the set of JIS screwdrivers that I purchased when I bought my FJR:

If you are talking about what I think you are talking about you certainly did it the hard way. The easy way is to remove the center cowling piece and the headlight cluster together as one unit. Then get at that screw to separate the two pieces after they have been removed.

Skooter nailed it. You remove the whole nose fairing and headlight assembly as one, then remove the screw holding the headlight..... As far as separating the headlight into housing and lens, etc., that's all either glued or sonic welded together... if you've got the broken tab, or want to rebuild one, use Permatex Plastic Epoxy. You can shape or file it afterwards and drill or even paint it.

Separating the top from the sides. Can the headlight assembly and cowl be removed in one piece without first removing the side panels?
No. To remove the cowl/headlight assembly you need to get at four Philips screws after disconnecting all wiring. To get at those four Philips screws you need to remove the side panels.
