rbentnail I think a lot of it depends....

Yes, to me the bike looks dorky without bags. Too fat, too heavy. Like a jumbo WalMart Gurl in spandex, know what I mean ? But in this case it's more function over form to me. I prefer to ride without a top case and the side cases provide the storage I feel I need. We are entering our season of "The Big Wet": brutal midday sunshine, 95*F temps with 95% humidity, and daily thunderstorms. To accommodate the drastic differences in riding gear and skin & electronics protection requirements, for me the storage is necessary. IIRC about the only time I ride without bags is following a wash, which means none this year .

Blue Gen2 I don't look at it much - maybe through the window of a coffee shop during a break...

I never "wear" the bags. Maybe someday I will go somewhere on it. I wish. Factory I serve has to have it's load of milo, each and every freakin' day, 5 days a week, forever... Pays the bills and I save a couple hundred, every week.

It's a clean looking, if slightly over-stylized bike. Everybody asks what it is. Says right on the side, there... Maybe they think FJR is my initials? Hoo knows...

So my answer is a non-answer: I don't look at it. I ride it!

I stopped for gas this past Saturday and a fellow who is familiar with the fjr came up to talk and asked about the mirrors and said he preferred the fz1 look over the factory mirrors look.

The fjr is a good looking bike imho and several have told me it has a “transformers” look to it, so to each their own. Do what makes you smile.
Do you have a picture you can show us. Would be interested to see it.

ronheater1970 I might be in the minority. I think it looks hideous without the bags, Like a mid 80's wannabe crotch rocket. My 2008 anyway!

Shemp71 IMHO the FJRs look pretty good without the panniers. I ride around town and commute that way most of the time. I don't bother with the little plug when the bags are off either. I don't mind the little holes.

I saw someone didn't like the way the exhaust looked without the bags, but I personally think the exhaust looks good.. they run parallel with the character line on the rear cowling. I have always thought the ST1300 looks like a dogs dinner without the bags. The Connie looks good without bags unless you have the stock exhaust... the stock muffler on those is cartoonishly big to my eye.

To each their own though, ride it the way it makes you happy.

This is how I ride most of the time:

Well, the right bag did follow the mirrors, down onto a boat

Jerry S A few months ago I was doing some stuff with my bike and took off the left side bag. Next day we went for a ride, I forgot to put it back on, didn't even notice. We rode 70 miles to our usual destination with my wife following me on her bike. She didn't even notice until we stopped and I pointed it out I only had one side bag. So much for a pre ride check.

Jerry S If I worried about what wouldn't look good on my bike, I wouldn't leave the house. I'm probably the funniest looking part of it. lol
