Transmission gear display on multi-function meter

I'm seeing an issue on my multi-function meter displaying the transmission gear on my 2016 ES. The display shows every gear except 2nd. Initially it's blank for 2nd and after a bit of riding, the 2nd will blink on/off the display occasionally. It displays fine for every other gear. After riding after a half hour or so the issue goes away altogether. I'm concerned this issue may turn into a problem. Anyone else experience something similar or have any thoughts? Much appreciated.

Your gear indicator/neutral switch likely needs a cleaning..... above the shifter linkage, two screws on black oval device, remove it, it has an o-ring, wipe contacts clean with a mild solvent, don't lose the spring loaded pin that's in the transmission. Won't take you long.....

Not sure how common the issue is but my 15 did the same to me. 1st and 4th would intermittenly blank out. Cleaned the switch but it didn't help so I replaced it.

The 2 screws holding it in are soft so be careful.

Thanks so much for the guidance. I should of figured to start with a sensor. l'll give it a cleaning first and see what happens. (The 2016 now has hexagon socket head bolts.)

So MamaYama dropped the rather cheesy JIS screws.

Time spent looking at motorcycles, even Harleys, is never wasted.

Just a suggestion but if you use a JIS screw driver issues with those screws will be non-existent. Once I started using the JIS screw drivers for my old Japanese bike restorations & repairs problems with stripping the screw heads out have stopped, using SAE screwdrivers that donít fit correctly is garanteed to round or strip the screw heads out. Also since I started using the JIS screwdrivers I rarely need to use my impact screwdriver anymore. JIS, highly recommended !

My 15 ES exhibits a similar problem. 5th gear comes and goes on the display. I removed the sensor and cleaned the contacts. Worked for a month or so, now blinking on and off again. I wonder if the spring tension on the small plunger is insufficient? I may try to stretch the spring a bit? If that fails, new sensor I guess. Although, I know when I'm in 5th, don't need the display to tell me. But, I am somewhat anal, and don't like things not working.
