There is a possibility the Gear Position Switch needs cleaning. It is located near the shifter linkage, black switch with two screws. Remove the switch, there is likely some accumulated oil. You will notice several contact pads and a small brass spring-loaded plunger in the engine (end of transmission shaft). Clean all the contacts and the plunger, then reassemble.

OK, same deal, it's in the same place. Remove it, clean it, put it back, try it. Connector will be somewhere at rear of engine near airbox if you can trace it up, then you can test it there, OR.....
In the service manual, go to Section 7 for explanation of Diagnostics mode, and you can test various functions, ie, side stand switch, neutral switch, etc. Several pages to read, can't explain all that here.
