Hello all,
Couple days ago had a nice, no, excellent ride. About an hour after I got home, went out to show a little love cleaning to the bike and noticed a small oily puddle under the breather hose that drops down below the bike. First time I've seen this. Ever. Any ideas on why this would be?
Bike is a 2003 with a bit over 40k.
Thanks in advance!
Jay
Did you have the dealer do the last oil change. They are known to overfill. That would be my guess. Or maybe you had the level a bit high. Was it oil or a watery mix. If watery it could be condensation from sitting. I see your in Ca so I assume you take the bike out quite often. If you do short rides condensation can build up in the cases/oil.A long ride would then get the oil hot enough to see water vapor coming from the breather. But now that I think about it doesn't California have a canister to catch those vapors?
Airbox has a drain hose with a small filter in it to filter any reverse flow. Crankcase breather hose comes in from the top..... to confirm oily, remove air filter and see what fogging you might have within the airbox. Normally that oily vapour is burned by normal engine operation via the air filter. Really there shouldn't be much of a film at all. I'd think you'd have overfill it a lot to have any effect. The Cali charcoal filter catches fuel vapours....
OK let's nail this down... location of the dripping..... there are three drains/overflows/vents.... with bike parked, what is directly above the dripping.
Airbox, coolant, fuel.
Does 2003 have fuel tank vent tube? I had one on C10 Kawi and when kept in a hot garage that tube would weep a few drops of light oily stuff.. I blamed it on ethanol fuel, for after I started adding a shot of startron to the tank during storage it stopped happening.
Okay. I'm back. Been a bit pre-occupied with the bizarre new normal. Still working, as I am an 'essential' person. hah. Jokes on me.
I do my own maintenance, including oil changes. Been about 1200 miles or so since the last oil change, did not over fill. Yes I'm in California. Only difference is, it's been three weeks since my last ride; up to three months ago, when I moved, I rode the bike at least two times a week. This particular ride was around 60 miles and I had multiple opportunites for speeds up to 100. Plenty of time to heat up and burn off any residual condensation. Besides, this bike is a heat monster and hits 3 bars sitting at a traffic light for 2 minutes in 60 degree temps, so I'm not concerned about water build up.
The pee pee was oily. No water. Again, first time this has happened in 41k of riding the bike. I am attaching three photos (hopefully I have done it correctly) showing what I see. I could not find any of these hoses in any of the online parts fiche sites. I haven't had the fuel tank off in long enough that I can't remember which hose goes where, so hope the photos make it clear as mud. In the photos showing the side of the bike, it's the lower hose and has a red stripe on it.
In the photo showing the underneath of the bike and the three hoses, it's the rear most hose.
Thanks for all the replies, and looking forward to reading more, if y'all are interested and have time. Oh wait, shelter in place. Yeah, we have the time.
Gen1 has a different fuel hose system under the tank than other Gens, service manual is quite lacking in hose routing diagrams... you will have fuel supply, return from the regulator, fuel tank vent hose, and maybe a fuel drain hose. Connections are near the rear of the tank and the vent/drain hoses have tubes internally leading up to the fuel cap area. You'll have to lift the tank, but fuel hoses is all I can think of up that high. Can't explain the oily at this point.
I know you all have been sitting on the edge of your saddle wondering of the outcome......no big deal. Hasn't done it since. Just the one time. It's a mystery and requires no more time or input.
Thanks!
Jay
