Exploded CCT

I thought I would take apart my old 03 CCT that I replaced and show how it works. Like Ray said, instead of a spring and a ratcheting mechanism, as on some other engines, the spring is wound up and, as the chain loosens, the spring "unwinds" and "screws" the arm out against "chain damper #2".

The screw threads, and the tension of the spring, serve as the ratchets that don't allow the arm to retract.

I did notice that you can vary the number of turns you put in the spring before you screw in the arm, which would theoretically, simulate a stronger spring wound less times.

I would love to compare a NEW CCT spring to and OLD CCT spring. My skeptical brain says that perhaps the only difference in the NEW CCT is that they wind the spring up a little more before inserting the "arm" at the factory. LOL

I also dismantled a CCT once, and I also had the same thoughts as you.

Mine broke two weeks ago. Two turns broke off just as I was getting on the highway. Grenaded the engine.

I just got the engine out today. I'm installing a brand new unit on the replacement engine before I install it, even though it has a blue dot on it. $100 in expenses beats $1,000.

I would like to know if the upgraded CCT spring is made of larger diameter wire or a different number of turns and if the spring failures were at the same general location on the spring. Just seems like the one that I disassembled is a THIN wire diameter...

Thanks for those pictures, I spent hours laying on my back here at a RV park wondering what goes on inside that CCT. I got mine installed ok and didn't even have a boxed end wrench. Wish I would have had a Dremel tool to put slots in the bolt heads, that would have made the install a lot easier. This forum got me out of the woods and back on the road. I'm only 20 miles to the Tail of the Dragon, sure glad I didn't break down up there.
