Thumbs down Brake Flush on Gen I ABS - Now Trouble - Pulsing Clunking When Apply Rear Brake Hard?

I've grabbed the Mityvac and fresh Valvoline DOT 3/4 syntheic fluid and flushed the clutch, then the front left, then front right, then the rear brakes. It's an 05 with ABS.

Before flushing the rear brake, I did at least three real hard rear brake stops till I activated the ABS. 20mph standing in the rear brake pedal till the pedal gave me a pulsing clanking feedback like the rear pedal was lifting up 4mm's repeatedly (3-4 times). Did not lock it up.

Then I flushed the rear brake fluid through the rear caliber nipple. No air bubbles and reservoir never ran out of fluid.

Test rode it - clutch and fronts fine. Gradually applying the rear brake pedal, it's smooth.

BUT . . . if I get aggressive with the rear brake pedal, I get that pulsing hammering repeated knocks or clanking feedback like the rear brakes are grabbing hard then pulsing. Rear pedal is giving me that pulsing feedback as before.

Searched and only found Gen II help.

Did I miss something?

What is that noise?

Was not there before the flush????

It sounds like normal activation of the ABS.

Thread title said ABS but I wasn't sure if it had liked brakes. Thanks for the clarification.

Have you considered re-doing the rear the old fashioned way, with the Mityvac? Couldn't hurt. I had a bad experience with a vacuum bleedy thingee a long, long time ago and haven't used one since. But it does sound like you're just activating the ABS by getting "aggressive with the rear brake pedal".

As I am about to attempt my own first brake/clutch flush, using a mityvac, this is of some interest to me. OP- what is different from before you did the flush? Is it giving ABS feedback even during moderate braking?

No commercials. No dictators.

@Russ :
I vacuum bled from all of the nipples 3 times then old school bled them once, then 2 more vacuum bleeds with the Mityvac until I saw clear brake fluid with no bubbles. So I combo bled them. The vacuum is just as good and faster. Nice tool to add for low cost and you can use it on all of your vehicles!
Everyone is right! ABS engaging I was really getting hard on that back brake pedal and I just hate that noise and feedback from the ABS activating. Clunking clunk clunk - vibrate your butt. But I was following Mr. TWO Bryan and did 3 hard rear brake stops each activating the ABS pump to get any possible crud out. My rear fluid reservoir appeared to contain a little grit and grayed up a notch.

Once you figure out how to use the Mityvac (read the manual), it's very handy and worth the $35 I paid at AutoZone:

Tips with Mityvac:
  • With the brake nipple closed, pump up to 15-20 Hg. Need pressure before.
  • Then use your small wrench to crack open the valve to let the brake fluid pull out
  • Keep a very careful eye on your reservoir level up top to make sure there is always fluid in (to not allow air into the system)

Glad I did it - because it is a shame that any mechanically inclined people would pay for work they can do themselves and finish the project in the same time it would take to ride/drive to your motorcycle dealer.

Around Seattle in the summer - peak of riding season, it's generally a 2-week wait for most service items at our dealerships.

I guess I never really stomped on my rear brake pedal until the fluid flush. Brake early and 80% front and 20% rears. Use rears to slighlty shed off speed carefully approaching turns and at intersections. So never stomped on rears. Don't think I changed anything.

I was surprised because I recently took an MSF 3-wheel course and rode some old Yamaha 300cc cruisers with sidecars and learned proper hard (emergency) braking technique without ABS or locking my wheel up. So the ABS impulse clunking startled me. Bike was perfectly behaved when commuting in today. Smooth braking front and rear.
All is well - just my frickin "violent" ABS.

If you're thinking about doing your own brakes, just do it. !
