What is the error code? I suspect the CEL is on because it is an active code, therefore you won't be able to erase until the condition is corrected.... but one needs to know what that code is to point us in the right direction.

There are only 8 specific faults that will bring up the yellow engine light.
You need a manual. there will be at least one specific error code.

If tied back to the original post re coil replacement, it would be an error 33 or 34.
The coils are driven directly from the ECU and hence could be subject to a crook 5 volt ECU supply, possible 5 volt spider fault or crook 12 volt S1 or S4 spiders

maybe i'm not doing this right, but once i am in the diagnostic mode, it goes through diag:1 thru 70. at 60 and61 is a 0, at 62 is a 1. 1=17,2=764,5=35,6=33,8=.7,20&21 are on. is there somewhere else where a code shows up?

ok, i started the bike up, and the # 11 was displayed where the time normally is. but according to the chart, that's the cylinder identification sensor, and the chart says the bike should not be able to start or drive, yet it does start up.

It would be the code 6=33 maybe ? Coil 1/4 ignition faulty
Clear all the error codes and start again.

I've found discrepancies in some of that info, esp the cylinder identification before.
It's not gospel.

I'd clear them all as Ken says, start over...... cyl. ident fault will show if it was unplugged while key was turned on..... plugged in later and bike started, stores the code, but bike runs.

2 things:1st. d62 erase all error codes keeps showing 1. turning the kill switch on and off doesn't clear it. 2nd my chart says d06 is coolant temp. i'm still not getting where these other "codes" are suppposedly showing up, and how the dealer thought it was code 33, #1 coil. Thanks to all of you trying to help this old guy.(67 years young). i just don't want to go back to the dealer and drop more bucks and not have the problem solved.

We have to remember it's a 2003, so, perhaps some connections have corroded causing some odd resistances...... i.e., coolant temp. I'd say first check the connections at the sensor, and if that doesn't fix it, test the sensor. The coil code was perhaps also a poor connection? anyway, gone now so I assume rectified. Once you've corrected the condition, you should be able to erase the code I think. Active faults most likely will cause the CEL to be on, I don't want to say always...
You could do a cursory trace of the wiring to ensure no rub-throughs, other corroded connectors in that circuit, etc.

raYzerman, thanks for the help. I'll be working on these checks and run downs, and at least it's narrowed down to those 8 codes that keep the CEL on. what's your take on this: I finish the diagnostic check, i turn the key on, and instead of the time showing, i see the number 11. Once i start the bike up, it goes away and the correct time is there. Is that 11 "the code"?

thanks to queensland ken for your input also.
