Covid Positive Experiences ??

I know, it’s a strange topic but bare with me. There has been a lot of discussion, response, opinions and outcomes during the Covid pandemic. My opinion is that we all are going through our own personal journey with it. I respect all of them.

My question is: Have you discovered something positive from all of this Covid stuff??

I have, and will share it with you.

I am not always the best at connecting with my fellow workers ( I work for the Veterans Administration hospitals). However, during Covid we use video / chat to collaborate all over the country. For some reason (for me) it seems easier to talk to my peers over video / chat rather than in person.

I was chatting with a co-worker one day ( which I would normally not ever do in person) and we started to discuss how to help nursing home bound patients to connect with their loved ones (or anyone). It turned into a very positive experience in helping people connect with family through Covid. And if you think about it, it’s even a good thing regardless of Covid as there are a lot of vets in nursing homes who have no family.

Another “Covid Positive” aspect of this is that my wife and I have been riding more ( two up) through all of this. We have logged more than 250,000 miles on an FJR together but this pandemic has us appreciating a simple ride through the Tennessee mountains.

Has anyone else found a positive experience out of this Covid situation ?

If it has two wheels or a mainsail - I will pilot it.

Yes, all the normal tourists have been locked out of Tasmania, which means considerably less traffic on our roads, which means much more pleasant and safer motorcycle rides for me.

For a while traffic was down to new years day levels and it was nice to be on the bike with few cars on the road. My email spam box went to zero at this time too.

Traffic is back to normal and the nutbars are out in full force. So are the letters from african prince's wanting to hide money in my bank account, my russian girlfriends want to send me photos, and online pharmacies are back to selling boner pills.

No long distance rides this summer and that's OK. I too have been enjoying the occasional short day ride just stopping to look at the local scenery of which there is plenty and then home for dinner and sleep in my own bed. I haven't really missed beating myself over the American road and getting a lousy sleep in some god awful overpriced joke of a motel. Oh, and then finally getting home tired and sore and wondering why I do this to my 77 year old self. Long and short is the grass ain't one bit greener. Wife and I used to two up but she is no longer interested in riding long distance and I can't blame her.

Oh yeah, as the summer progressed the Californians began hitting the road again and invading the Oregon coast in their usual obnoxious numbers which always has irritated me but not so much this year as it's made me realize what a desirable place I am fortunate enough to live in.

First step toward burkas.

Early on here, I could get across town in record time because the streets were pretty much empty and cops weren't stopping anyone for minor infractions (speeding, etc.).

Ridden wet. Put up hard.

I found the riding much better. Over the summer I ended up taking four one week solo motorcycle vacations.

1) Rush hour took a break this summer.
2) No reservations needed on vacation , I just stopped briefly at 4:30 or so and picked an empty hotel nearby to stay in.
3) The Marriot rates this summer were down to what Motel6 charged in 2019.
4) Waffle house was open everywhere I went.

Skyline drive and the Blue Ridge parkway at the end of May was a blast. 570 or so miles and for most of the length I was the only one out there.

COVID19 puts out bushfires.

In 2019 and into 2020 Australia was experiencing their worst bushfire season ever, so in late 2019 the Chinese invented COVID19 (The Donald said so) to help put the fires out. The plan began to take effect in January 2020 when news stories about The Virus started to appear, sparsely sprinkled among the overwhelming number of news stories about the Australian bushfires. By March 2020 stories about COVID19 were all that appeared in the news. No longer were there reports about the Australian fires so I guess they'd all been extinguished. I can only conclude that the fires were out because COVID19 had extinguished them, and that's something positive.😁

So I decided to buy a bike in Saskatoon in the province of Saskatchewan which is a 6 hour drive from Calgary ,it was mid April and the lockdown etc was in full swing ,my wife said I was going crazy & they would stop me @ the Alberta /Saskatchewan border ,I was not breaking the law & I went anyhow ,six hours on roads which were nearly empty of all vehicles and never passed one cop ,it was a very pleasant drive to say the least ,the seller wore a mask , I wore a mask the deal was done ,the bike was loaded ,another six hours to get back home on near empty roads ,it was a pleasant trip ,it's one thing I will miss about covid-19 is the empty streets and lack of vehicles & traffic ,oh the wildlife was everywhere in the open prairies.
