I got my left over 2015A at the end of 2016 and it is my 1st FJR. I took it for a 30 minute test ride and did not know what to think of the "whine". I went online before I bought the bike and found out it has been a normal for many years. I test rode it again the next day to decide if I could live with it then rode it home.

I really hope that is all you are hearing and good luck.

Is there metal on the magnet of the drain plug? I usually find a little bit of grey residue, like very fine metal powder that I wipe off the magnet. I have used Royal Purple and/or Mobil 1 75w-90 gear oil for 50 thousand miles between two FJR’s. No issues with noise.

Thanks a lot, Burt. I haven't "heard" the whine in my FJR for years, now I cannot NOT hear it. LOL

I noticed the "whine" when I had my FJR. I attributed it to the stout shaft drive as it sounded very similar to a Rocket III I had. I thought it added character to the bike. It sounded like the starship Enterprise straining at high warp speeds.

Again, I think the whine is coming from the middle gear drive where smaller gears facilitate the 90 degree turn to the output shaft. More likely to whine than the larger ratio gear and pinion of a rear drive.

I always thought the whine was from the turbo spinning up.

That would be a supercharger, turbos don't whine

My old XJ 750 (5 speed, shaft drive) made the same whine. I asked questions about it back then and got the same answer as here - middle gear.

It may be a Yamaha thing, but I like it.

In. I want to find out if going to Yamaha fluid resolves the whine.

I seriously doubt the type of oil you put in a final drive will be the root cause of a 'whine' sound.

You are listening too hard and hearing things....

The special Yammie whale jizz final drive oil supposedly has an anti-foaming agent for high speed operation. Whatever. It's expensive, but as noted above it is changed so infrequently and uses so little that cost is not a big factor for me. Over 600,000 miles on FJRs and I've used the super-duper, special Yammie whale jizz and Mobil 1 75W-90 synthetic. It's just oil. Nothing magic.

Ride more, stress less!
