Easy fix when your seat will not lock down or is hard to latch

I had my seat off today on my 2005 FJR and when I went to put it on the latch would not catch on the aluminum tab that is riveted on the bottom. I screwed around for over an hour trying to figure out why.It used to work.Long story short,I had the rear seat off and could see that the tab with the slot cut out of it was not going down far enough to engage the latch and the seat was resting on the frame!I took a coarse rat tail file and filed out the bottom of the tab about 1/16-1/8" so the slot is now longer.Worked like a charm,I do not have to slam the seat down or push hard, just set it on and a gentle downward pressure and it clicks.Just thought I would share this for someone who has to jump on the seat to get it to latch. Not sure if other year seats are the same but it works for GenI bikes.

That's it, your warranty is voided ! LOL

I'm not familiar with Gen 1, could there be an issue with the plastic seat height High/Low bracket that was causing it to have difficulty?

If your seat doesn't lock it's because it is not located properly, after the filing if you get it to locate properly it'll be loose and rattle.
But hey it's your bike, do with it what you will.

Well, not always. Many of us have had custom seats built on the original seat pans and the changes in shape/added thickness can cause the seat to be a little harder to both latch and unlatch.

I don't know that I would start filing on the latch mechanism but it isn't my bike. The OP may have a different issue that we aren't familiar with.

Never run out of ideas, traction, and real estate at the same time.
