The real issue is that the rear subframe is not as strong as it could be. The extra weight of a top case bouncing around back there can break the subframe and you will NOT like that.

The Givi SR357 is a nice metal frame that spans across the common break point of the subframe. It will strengthen the rear of the bike and support the top case nicely.

It is worth mentioning the SHAD now builds a mount that is similar to the SR357 and that Yamaha offers an aluminum tail rack that also serves the same purpose.

Best pic I could find of the original "tail rack":

This is the SR357. Note the steel tubing.

The Givi V47 Tech top case:

I can see how you might want a lot of capacity and many folks do just fine with the bigger cases. I prefer the Givi V46 and V47 for how they look on the bike.

The '15 has the V47 and Pop's '07 has the V46:

Where did you order the seat !!!

Ha! I was waiting for someone to ask about that seat. That is a Top Sellerie, they are made and sold in France. They are or at least they were, available here. They look fantastic but they are not that comfortable. I would say that a short person might really like them. The Top Sellerie is rounded across the top rather than flat like the factory seat. It also pushes the rider very far forward. Like all the way against the tank forward.

The Top Sellerie was not comfortable but it was beautiful.

@Mopheadama I agree with you almost completely. Almost.

1. There have been some spectacular rear subframe failures.
2. Yamaha put a warning sticker on the bike telling us NOT to put any weight up there.
3. The subframe failures are not common. They are real but they are infrequent.
4. The weak subframe started in '06.
5. I don't want to put a lot of weight that high and that far back anyway.

Where I agree with you 1000% is that it is just wrong to say, "THIS topcase is The Best". Just because I run it and like it doesn't mean that anyone else has to do it my way. I prefer the look of my Givi over the look of the factory cases but that does not mean everyone else has to feel that way.
Bill Lumberg likes this.

Here is my top case. Garauld rack and Nelson Rigg bag. When I sold the 08 I just moved the rack onto the 14 and very seldom use it. If I'm out for more than a couple of days I will mount the rack and strap the bag on. Had Garauld add a couple of pieces to his rack to accommodate securing the straps. It does require removing the bag at night but for no more than I use it its no big deal.

Store my liners and road atlas back there and that's about it so no weight.

Hi All,

I know this conversation is a few months old, but I am looking into purchase of the yamaha 50L top case with the backrest and was wondering how does the backrest get mounted? I've not been able to come across installation instructions.

The top case has premarked positions where to drill holes for mounting it.
