The design change took place mid-2007 model and no dots were used for a quite a while. Then one dot came, another minor revision came with the latest dot. If you buy one now, it will be the latest.
I can't answer if the factory installed one has a dot.... likely not on Gen2, but maybe a Gen3 owner can chime in.

Martin, welcome to the forum, good choice on FJR, I am on my second one.

German and not riding an RT or a GS ? What happened ? are you saying you don't trust enough the domestic brand ?....just kidding, just kidding :-)

At 35 I would have to guess that you are the youngest here, which is a shame cause this forum is also great place to learn about; arthritis, artificial hips, bad knees, dementia and other aging related issues ...welcome

I just changed mine to one with a green dot. My FJR shows on steering neck label it was built 01/08. When I removed the old one (with no dot) it was different from the new one. New one with Green dot is just a hair shorter. I have a picture but I seem to have trouble putting up on this site.
My old CCT was still good. I heard a little noise once in a while from cam chain. I changed It after reading about loosing CCT and destroying engine. I have 200 miles since change and all is quit on the cam chain side.

The old style ('07 & prior) were noticeably different in shape and spring strength. The later ones are the way to go. I don't know what to say about a couple '08's that failed except one has to pick a mileage where one should just get a new one (and I'd say '08-'12). Gen3 definitely has the latest of the latest.

Martin, welcome to the forum; glad to have you with us.

With a father in the Air Force, I was fortunate enough to live in Germany for seven years, from 67 to 71, and again from 75 to 78. I graduated from Kaiserslautern American High School in 1977. Can not tell you how much I miss it. It is a beautiful country and I try to get back as much as I can. I did not get as far north as Hamburg; we did most of our travelling in the south.

There is a lot of good information to be learned from this group. Good luck with your new bike.
