OEM Top Case

I just joined the forum having picked up a Gen III late 2018. I was lucky in that the bike came with an OEM top case I like to use when commuting, but I noticed the case causes some slight funky changes to the aerodynamics of the bike at highway speed - makes the front of the bike feel slightly less stable. I'm wondering if this is common for the FJR with OEM top case? Doesn't seem to matter how much I load in the case for this to happen. I've run other previous bikes with top cased and never experienced any issues with handling even in windy conditions. Thoughts?

Iíve had two FJRís - the first with a factory 39L top case, the current one with a factory 50L top case. Iíve never experienced the issue you mention.

Cheers,

Anthony

I always feel the things you mention when a top case is used. Try stiffening up the rear suspension a little, that helps.

I have run a Gen2 with a Givi V46 and the Gen3 with a SHAD SH39, a Givi V46, and a Givi V47. At anything over 60mph I feel a very slight difference in handling. I don't feel much if any difference from crosswinds or when traveling in a straight line but there is a sort of...resistance to turning. I also notice it when passing 18 wheelers, whether overtaking or meeting. Just a little extra...push.

Nothing I ever worried about and it never affected my fuel mileage either. But it is there for me anyway.

Never run out of ideas, traction, and real estate at the same time.

I have a '16 and the 50L OEM top case and have written about this earlier. I guess any top box of this size has a negative influence on the bike. I decided to replace the steering head bearings to tapered roller bearings and that solved 95% of the problem I noticed.

I have a Shad 50l never noticed any real difference between it being on or off, maybe a slight difference in the top heaviness feeling. no difference in fuel economy either.

I played with it a bunch when I had the front end wobble running with it on/off & loaded/unloaded to see if it had any effect on the handling and wobble which it didn’t, new tapered steering head bearings really tightened things up. Much more positive feel.

The only thing that was topcase related that affected my bike Is that when I had the broken subframe and replaced the oe shad steel “X” adapter mount with the Yamaha heavy aluminum rack which I mounted the Shad case adapter directly to, it lowered the topcase about 1 1/2 in and seemed to reduce the top heaviness feeling a bit and maybe quicken the steering as well,,,,maybe.

I can't tell any difference when I have my OEM case on or off.

1987 Yamaha Venture to 88,256 miles...crashed
2009 FJR 33750 miles and counting

I would definitely play around with the suspension settings - a lot can be "fixed" that way...
