Visiting South Africa

Hi to the RSA riders

I am going to be visiting 'the land of my birth' for the next 3 weeks - mainly lot's of family stuff to attend to. Zea's dad turns 80 (Gauteng), sister & B-I-L in CT, Garden Route road trip by car (born in Knysna, lived in Mossel Bay and George for a while) and also got to see S-I-L/B-I-L near Nelspruit. I probably won't get a chance to get on 2 wheels while we are there - not even taking my riding gear (I think, but this could change when I pack ) I am considering hiring a bike for 2 or 3 days to ride out east from JHB to the Dullstroom/Pilgrims Rest/Sabie/escarpment/lowveld (spent a year at in SAAF at Mariepskop) and if it happens it will be in one of the weeks starting 13 or 20 November. But I may find that I don't have the time - who knows.

My email address while away is david.holiday (at) hotmail.com If anyone wants to leave me a cell no at that email address we may even catch up.

Neil, safely back in Australia, and thanks for your great offer .

Family commitments meant no riding, but I did get to visit a few bike shops. Met up with one FJR rider in George - will post a piccie sometime. He's not on the board, but was stopped making a phone call so a chat was in order.

I'll post some impressions later, but (some) RSA drivers are really wild-crazy

Welcome back David an Zea,

When are we going to scare out the spiders that have made your bike home since you've been gone?

Maybe we can get another boys and girls ride in soon?

Welcome back guys!

Africa aint for woosies when it comes to RSA roads A 60km zone actually means 160km, every one thinks the 1 fell off....A Police man? whats that?,...oh yeah, he is the one you give bribes to if he can stop you doing 220km per hour, and I have to ask, do any other countries insist on number plates? I think it's time to get on the old FJR and head for the pub...leagal limit on drinks, whats that?

Anyway, I hope you enjoyed your time over here

Oops, guess I could have posted here.

Anyway, my daughter will be visiting there and I am considering coming to visit her while she's in SA. I'll have more details Sunday on dates and such, but I most likely will be there sometime in June.

Is it cold there during the winter?

Can be chilly up in Johannesburg Gauteng in the mornings and night but ridable during the day. Not too bad on the Natal coastal areas. The Cape has winter rain fall so that can be a bummer. Eastern part of the country has good riding weather.

I am 10 minuets from JHB International (O R Thambo International now)
so if you are spending time in Johannesburg give me a shout and I'll buy you a beer and show you the sites.

Looks like we'll be closer to Capetown.

He will direct you to the boys in Cape Town.

I will post a ride plan for you later which will take you through some of the most awsome passes in the western Cape
