Thanks Ra Yzerman for the information. If the dealership won't take me in as a walk in, I'll be ordering the OBD reader.
I'm only 652 miles away. But the adapter cable is less than $15 on eBay and Harbor Freight sells OBD-II scanners for $35, sometimes less. Some autoparts stores will loan you one if you don't leave the parking lot. Or you can get a bluetooth/wifi adapter for $15 and a free app on smartphone.

The pigtail is under the seat. About 12" long, folded back on itself with a rubber cover over the connector. Terribly sad Yamaha didn't install the proper connector in the first place.

If the firmware flash has not been performed then you should just wait on your dealer. The issue was key not solidly at 12 o'clock lights up the dash but doesn't bring everything online. When you hit the starter it doesn't start but other systems note the fault and light the CEL. If you don't have a CEL you can test by turning the ignition key clockwise until dash powers up then try to start the engine. Starter will fail no matter what but if you have old firmware the CEL will be illuminated. And you need to go to the dealer to clear the light and update the firmware.

I believe if traction control is disabled there will be no CEL.

What year bike? (If you added that to your signature, we wouldn't need to ask.)

My '13 doesn't do that either.

Time spent looking at motorcycles, even Harleys, is never wasted.

Running the bike on the centerstand may or may not set some error codes... basically related to abnormal signals from front wheel sensor. Check Engine should not come on but can if..... corroded/dirty sensors, remove, clean off aluminum corrosion (from the housings), install with a light film on the sensor plastic adapter and in the hole in the aluminum plate.
If the CEL is on, it is possible yours didn't yet get the reflash to fix the ignition key issue/stopping the bike with the kickstand.
The Yamaha 4-way connector is power and ground and two communication wires... OBD connectors have 16-way, many adapters for many vehicles using a variety of wires.

My flashed 2016 gave CEL for driving rear wheel up in the air in gear. Posted here somewhere. P2059 is best guess. All I wanted to do was wake my Garmin TPMS because I didn't have handheld tire pressure gauge near. Others inform this won't happen if traction control was disabled in advance.

All I wanted was to "hear the engine sound" and "go for a ride - stationary" while minus 20 and snow outside no traction control disabled, and I got the CEL
