I use a valve stem puller to pull valves but I wouldn't want to have to carry one around. Just spend the $1.50 for a new valve stem every time you change a tire or install metal valve stems and you won't have to worry about it.

I recently bought a Michelin TPMS and would give it 10 out of 10. It has a round display unit that I have stuck on the black plastic panel that covers the battery. The display unit is charged on a USB, but lasts for ages and gives a continuous tyre pressure readout that alternates front and back, from sensors on the valves.

Heck, don't worry about the old inner piece when in a pinch.
