FJR 2016 Riding In Rain Issues

Hi All,

It has been 2 weeks I bought the 2016 FJR. Currently it is still running in and gotten around 400 miles.

During the past 2 weeks... there were 3 times that I rode the new FJR in the rain.. yesterday evening was the latest.

What I experience was the engine suddenly became sluggish and jerking even when I try to blip the throttle gently... bike behave normally when the road is dry again. The first two times it happened (First two times it happened, bike was totally stock),I assume that the bike is still running in and to give it more miles.. but after yesterday incident, my gut feeling said that this bike have issues riding in the rain. My 2013 FJR run in the rain flawlessly.

On last weekend, while transferring all my previous accessories from my 13 bike to the 16, I found that there was additional hole approximately the size of my 4 fingers (see attached picture) at the air box area (left side of bike). There were no such hole on my 13 FJR.

I am assuming that during raining, when the rear wheel is spinning on the wet road, it caused water mist to be formed and the 'wet air' is sucked into the engine causing it to behave inappropriately.

Please, if there is anyone facing the same situation or have solutions... please let me noe. If there is no advise, this might be my first time sending the bike to Yamaha Agent for diagnostic

Are you sure it wasn't simply your traction control engaging? You could try disabling traction control the next time you ride in the rain and see if the symptoms reoccur.

I rode 3 days straight in the rain with my 2016 with no such issue.

I dont think it could be the TCS function activated. The TCS light did not flash during the incident.

There have been reports of some bikes being delivered without the proper cover on the end of the airbox. Might be worth it to pull the left side cover and make sure the cover is there, complete and installed correctly. I'm talking about parts 10-14 on the parts diagram. (link)

The prior years' ES has the rear fender flap, the A did not. Parts diagram indicates the 2016 has it on both. Perhaps accidentally omitted? Item 22

Even with all of the flaps and shields in place, dielectric grease in all weather-exposed connectors pays big dividends.

Now: 2015 FJR1300ES

Then: 2008 FJR1300A

The optimist fell ten stories. At each window bar, he'd yell: "all right so far...."

Either way I think he should be taking it to a dealer and telling them to fix it. Definitely a safety concern.
