K&N Air Filter plus Staintunes -way too lean

FJR Owners - The independent, international website for Yamaha FJR1300 and FJ enthusiasts: General FJR Chat: K&N Air Filter plus Staintunes -way too lean

Took the bike in for a 20000k service today and was speaking with the dealer. He had the fairing off and was running the bike at 3000rpm for 5 minutes and found that the headers were glowing cherry red. It seems by fitting a high flow K&N air filter and staintune exhausts, the bike is running way too lean and needs to be properly adjusted with a gas analyzer.

Yamaha Aust advised that I need to get this done or it may lead to other problems. However no -one local seems to have the appropriate gear to do this.

This is happening even after I went up 5 pts on all cylinders for the CO setting. While this has noticably reduced the heat in the engine, I hate to think what the intensity of the heat glow was before - although I certainly felt it.

It happened to me while I was doing a throttle body sync glowing cherry red hot. Thats because no air is cooling them !!!!!!

I would not worry to much about it.

The cherry-red headers are normal when not being cooled. Quite the sight, no?

Outta here...Charles

Gentlemen, Thank you all for contributing such wonderful comments and suggestions to this fantastic site. I only have a little over 1000 miles on my FJR, but am already in the need for a staintune "like" slip-on. Isn't there anybody in the states that builds the equivalent and hopefully for less cost?
Sincerely,
Zenith.

Please help me out. I am trying to understand why someone needs/wants the Staintune exhaust.

Is it for a louder and more authoratative sound, like the first add-on that Harley owners make? Maybe it is because the cans look better? Is it better performance, like is there a very signifigant torque and/or horsepower gain that would make me want to spend that kind of money? What is it?

Honestly, I am just trying to figure it out. What am I missing here?

Aftermarket cans can be hugely lighter, hugely less restrictive, without being much louder. Looks? Well, only a little.

The effect of less weight and freer flow can make a bike feel much snappier, lighter and better performing. Just 2 more horsepower goes a loong way on the rump dyno, too.

If you just traded in your GoldWing for an FJR, you probably don't care. But if your other bike is an R1, FZ1, VFR, etc... I think it will make the FJR even better!

My old ST1100 was way, WAY more fun to ride with aftermarket cans. Those cans were a bit on the loud side, though. (TwoBrothers)

I'm not saying I don't love this bike in current form, I've just had a lot of fun with the extra pull you can get with a well-tuned exhaust.

Can I add my voice to Backslaps'. My FJR could really do with a new pair of silencers due to cosmetic damage. I can live with the scratches, but would fork out for a pair of aftermarkets if I could guarantee a significant performance increase. There is a choice here of staintunes, predator, plus a few others in catalogues.
I know what the power output is on my local dyno -a proper Fuchs for twelve and a half quid a go, so would be able to make a direct comparison. I currently get around 130 at the back wheel, but know how dynos vary.
Does anyone have evidence that a free flow exhaust produces more power on an FJR? By that I mean dyno evidence, not subjectice views which are maybe influenced by just having spent loads of cash and having a louder bike.

My USD0.02$ thinks that you can't just slap on a freer flowing exhaust and expect better performance. The purpose of a freer flowing exhaust is ultimately increase the flow throughout the intire system (intake, cylinder and exhaust).

If you want real performance upgrade, you should tune the exhaust with the intake and the fuel amounts. If you free up the exhaust, then free up the air intake, if you put more air into the system, you'll need to put more fuel into the system.

Then you have balance, grasshopper, then you are ready....

My question is, once we do that, is there room for a blower???

I guy on SpeedTV said: "If it isn't blown, it sucks!"

As one of the first to go Staintune, my thoughts are..

I love the look of the oval cans..

the deeper exhuast note sounds wonderfull, but can be a bit noisy if you run it without the baffles

six pound less weight per side is no bad thing, but I could do better by stopping my visits to Mc Donalds and the Union Inn

They claim an extra 5-6 bhp but down here in Cornwall we don't have any Dynos so I can not vouch for the verasity of that one, allthough the seat of my pants tell me that I have more grunt in the all important 4-7k range..

This is not a mod that you NEED but if you like the look, the sound, SOME? increase in power and the Idea of less weight, why not..

just my 20p

Fellow Riders,
Some of you jumped at the thought of more power or torque with the alternative exhaust system. That would be fine too, but what I'm really after is the well defined musical note of a deep throaty growl. All the more pleasant to judge your engine RPM and speed as you work through the gears on a twisty back Missouri highway. Music gentlemen ... music ... not just noise or loud exhaust ... music - music!

Zenith,

Where abouts in Missouri are you from? I'm getting an '04 and do not know of many FJR's in Missouri. I'm in Kansas City and only know of one other FJR in KC.

Beardo,

Kirksville, MO ... North East. Needless to say, I haven't seen any yet. I recently took a ride to Lebanon and got stares, like "what is that bike you are riding?" You will be happy with the '04 (with any FJR).

Bagman,

Thanks for the input. You have sold me on Staintune. Just hate to pay over $700 US dollars for my fetish (that which my wife doesn't understand - of course).

Hey Zenith!

Where are the closest twisties to you in Kirks? Maybe we should meet there on some nice day.

I'm sure some US factory will offer cans for the FJR... when? Dunno? Full system, probably not.

The Two Bros cans for the ST were around 600 bucks if I remember correctly.

Cheers!

Zenith,

$700 is way too much. I paid $530 for mine from CBTimports. Worth every penny. You'll love the music!!!

Second Baggy. Loved the staintunes. Check starcycle.com. Around $560 or so. Sound good both with and without the baffles. And staintunes use stainless steel packing material...it will not blow out, and thus never needs repacking.

Man! Don't you just hate that whole supply and demand thing? Looks like the folks at Staintune finally discovered that they are one of the few who offer any exhaust for the FJR. They seem to have upped their price everywhere.

I bought mine last July for $535 or $530 or something like that. Now everyone has gone up over $700! (Even StarCycle!)

Aren't the Staintunes Australian? Part of the increase might be because the value of the US$ has slipped around 20% compared to the Australian buck in the last year. 530 x 1.20 = 636.
