Liquid....I can see why a dunlop rep would say that, as with sport touring bikes or heavy sport bikes they have some of the worst. What you said is true though.

Where does one go to verify the accuracy of a tire gauge? Do you need to send them into a calibration shop annually, or what?

Every kind of high-performance tire I've owned, on every bike I've owned... and those of my friends have had scalloping or cupping to some extent, even if they're run at high pressure and ridden conservatively. I've seen it on Avon, Dunlop, Bridgstone, Michelin, Metzeler... I really don't think there's much we can hope to do to change this if we want lots of grip.

Why aren't there treads on the inside of the tyres as well as the outside? Then we could turn them inside out when they get worn and get double the mileage.

I think that tire pressure is a factor in cupping that shouldn't be ignored. I wore out the front tire on my Shadow Spirit 1100 in 4500 klicks on a trip down the Blue Ridge Parkway and around Deal's Gap. I'll admit it that I rode it more like a sportbike than a cruiser but wasn't until my wife gave me a digital guage that I found that my religious checking of tire pressures had been for naught. Damn guage was reading 4 pounds heavy so instead of 33 or 34 pounds, I had been putting 29 or 30 in the front. Never was a problem with the rear tire but it didn't take the braking loads that the front tire got. I now have 2 digital guages that read less than a 1/2 pound variance between them. Current front tire has 7000 klicks and no sign of cupping and lots of wear left.

I bought a digital gauge and compared it to my barrel type and they both read the same. I run at 2.5 Bar as per the manual (2.9 in the rear) I've checked with my tyre supplier he has suggested that I run it with a few more PSI in the front.
PS the fronts now down to the wear bars - the rear , although squared off still has some life in it - so it looks like I'm resigned to buying them together He reckons Michelins are harder - but I seem to remember Joos? saying they let go without warning. So no thanks.... I guess I'll just have to change my agressive riding style to more like Highlanders
