Any takers? Mike.

Yes but with wheels falling off, jack-hammer handlebars, dodgy valve guides,..........oh I am going to have a Bex and a cup of tea. Maybe I should lay down now

Inadequate front brakes, fall over in corners if you go too fast

Make that another Bex and another cup of tea please nurse (or please send in the sister with a jug or two of milk )

I'm also going to lie down , but only after a long blast on the best bike I've ever owned FJR 'Black Stealth'

David the Rally today was really great. We met at Capalaba and then rode to the Muster point at LoganHolme Hyperdome Carpark, then on to a picnic ground at Mt Cootha. There were about 330 bikes all together! Great fun.
There were 6 FJR's, 3 silver, 2red and 1 black.

Thanks for the info, Mike. Yesterday was our ride day this weekend - today was sloth and veg-out, watch Bathurst, F1 and try and fit the Moto GP in somewhere too.

No, there were also some genuine reasons why today didn't work out for us.

We FJR's should plan a local (Brisbane) FJR ride 1st or 2nd weekend of November , and Nocchi, if you leave this week you'll be here in time to join us. BYO popcorn

Thanks for the welcome David1300, Nocchi and Mike.
Mike, I haven't bought one yet, but intend to soon.
Reason - don't know if anyone is same, but with screen up full I cop wind at eye level and I am only 5'8".
My research on net tells me that 3-4 inches extra height and curved top lip will give much better weather protection without increased backpressure.
Although I tend to ride with screen down in summer, as I like the breeze..
Thoughts?!

By David1300 on Sunday, October 13, 2002 - 10:09 am:  View David1300's Profile Search for other posts by David1300 Edit this post

D'base. I'm slightly taller (5ft10) and have no trouble generally with the screen fully up. I find that wind direction affects the screen performance a fair bit.

Nevertheless, I have toyed with idea of getting a Cee Baileys screen in the blue tint, just because I think it looks awesome. I would probably go 50mm taller and 50mm wider. See http://www.fjrowners.ws/forum/messages/2173/2944.html?

I have corresponded with them in the US, and they are happy to mail to Australia, but if anyone else is interested in one of their screens we could possibly save a little on postage if we did it together. Have a look at the above and lets talk if it looks interesting to you. If so, I'll start a new thread to attract whatever other interest there may be from other Aussies.

The result of my experiment with the eagle screen was to get out the angle grinder and cut it back to the standard size. This left me with a standard size/shape screen tinted grey.

By Database on Sunday, October 13, 2002 - 11:13 am:  View Database's Profile Search for other posts by Database Edit this post

David. I looked at the blue tint Cee Baileys screen as well, in fact this is why I started searching Aus. for similar.
I gave up the idea, $AU etc. but you have a good suggestion, so count me in as the CB is praised by lots in US. I like the 4x2 inch (100 tall x 50 wide).
Get the thread happening, and may I suggest we expand to include other stuff as well.

IanMinus and FJR01...
Ok guys, I'm going down Friday. Not sure as yet whether it will be Friday Morning or Afternoon. Thinking of going on Friday Morning and doing a couple of the checkpoints on Friday, just to make it an easier day on the Saturday. You guys be careful down there, just remember that it can be lunacy on those roads on the Saturday.
FJR01... There's not as many rides on down there this year, and yes H*nda is one of the Sponsors and is putting up a prize of $20,000 worth bike as first prize in the raffle draw.
But honesty be careful, from last years experience it can be very dangerous and they expect even more bikes this year.

Datbase...
I had a 4 inch taller ermax on my bike and have now taken it off. While I found that it offered a great deal more protection, I also found that fuel consumption suffered severely and that with the higher screen I sufferd a higher degree of wind pressure on my back, which caused back ache when riding long distances. Just my thoughts mind you, but maybe worth thinking about.

By Mike on Sunday, October 13, 2002 - 09:38 pm:  View Mike's Profile Search for other posts by Mike Edit this post

Data, we ran into a guy at a rally yeterday who had bought a new screen. It was taller, wider and tinted, he was very disappointed as he said it didn't give him the extra protection he was looking for.
I'm 5'9" and I must admit I find the screen great.
I usually ride with it down most of the time and put it up if I get over 120km/h and I've noticed I get a lot more buffeting if my wife is on the back compared to riding on my own.Try to find a bike with a different one on and get a ride before you buy if you can. Best of luck!

Re Snowy trip, we did the "Tumut Charity Rally" last year and booked accommodation in advance for this year, but of course, like many other events, the Tumut rally has been cancelled due to insurance problems. A group of us are still going but it will just be a regular Ulysses weekend ride.

I take your point about being careful.....we experienced some "cowboys" at times last year. Overtaking at speed in our lane, etc.

I'll certainly be watching those mirrors!

On a serious note - we are in the grip of the worst drought in recorded history here on the Gold Coast, and it's not much better inland. Road kills in some areas are shocking - no fun riding at dawn or dusk as they come to get the little bit of green grass and moisture at the roadside.

Go Nocchi, Go Nocchi

My shopping list is:

New Givi rack - Metro Yamaha has it in, and I'm picking it up on Saturday (then I'll design a backrest/frame for a Ventura soft bag to fit the rack. That way either topbax or soft bag can fit)

Blue tint Cee Baileys screen - +2+2 - just because it looks so cool

Mount for GPS - probably design my own to go between the handlebars - then I can really play with this toy

Power outlet for above

Tank and pannier protectors - seen somewher on this site - 3M product that adheres 'by vacuum'

Sheepy Hollow sheepskin cover for seat - although the lovely Zea says "Why - it's comforable as it is" (but this is locally sourced, so we won't need Nocchi Wholesalers to get involved here )

That's it Nocchi. It seems that you're the man

David 1300

I had the 3M Ricochet product applied by a local auto signage/stripes shop in sunny Cairns.
Any decent auto sign shop should be able to point you in the right direction, but beware, do not try it yourself, as it is easy to get creases in it when applying it using heat. The product is quite thin and totally transparent, will not go crispy or yellow in uv light, and is invisible to the uneducated.
Let the auto shop do it for you, it's cheap, and you always have a comeback if it is creased on application.
If you see tiny air bubbles in it after application, don't worry, just park the bike in the sun for a few hours and they should shrink away.
PS It works.!!!

By Petecom on Wednesday, November 13, 2002 - 11:38 am:  View Petecom's Profile Search for other posts by Petecom Edit this post

PS
I forgot to mention that if you have had a respray done to a part of the bike to which you then wish to apply 3m Ricochet, wait for at least one month. This is because if the person applying it fucks it up, they will try to peel it off and pull the laquer with it unless it is properly cured.

Gilbo,
Sorry man, but be comforted by the fact that the wallabies and the poms will be a close call tomorrow. The win by Ireland last weekend was well deserved, and only goes to uphold the fact that it is a sport not yet rigged by Don King et al. I hope the same can always be said for the sport of bike riding in general, and fairness and good humour can be appreciated by all who visit this site and own such an awe inspiring bike.
Good luck to all, whatever your persuasion.

However;
Go the Wallabies!!!!!!!!!

Oh well,
We'll flog you Poms in the world cup next year instead

PS
Is it just Cairns, or do people in silly cars take FJR's as a threat to their manhood and try to keep ahead of you at any cost?
If you appear in their rear vision mirror it would seem that you have just pulled down their bananas in pyjamas boxer shorts and revealed a tiny little weener!
(Try the coast road from Cairns to Port Douglas one day)

Pete - may be a FNQld problem from eating too many mango's Down here in SEQld the biggest issue is drivers just not seeing you, sometimes because that's just the way they are, and sometimes it's because we have a lot of tourists who are driving with only half their brain on the job at hand. Also, many main routes are designated tourist drives (which, by definition, attracts the distracted drivers), so we try and avoid them and develop our own network of good, less populated roads.

Once you get off the main highways here, once a motorist sees you, there is often (not always) a tendency to 'wave you past' when the road allows. We reinforce that being courteous in return, and blasting past them still accelerating at warp speed

Helps them to keep a better lookout in the future

Having driven the road north from Cairns about 3 times in my life, from recollection you don't have an alternative - it's just the one road, isn't it

David, I think we need to do 2 things. 1st plan a ride quite a long way off to give people time to make sure they can attend. 2nd try to come up with a way of contacting as many FJR riders as possible. More the Merrier!!
In fact it may be a good idea to get a load of people before we set a date.

Mike - I plan a ride every weekend . Our plans are pretty flexible, though, that is why we are generally available at shortish notice, but Saturdays are better. We have Sunday morning commitments, but Sunday lunch/afternoon is fine.

In the weeks ahead 7/8 Dec is out, and from 20 Dec to mid Jan is out, but other weekends we will be riding. Where to, and with who, time will tell. May go up to Maroochydore area this Saturday, over the mountain via Montville.

Atlas - does get used a bit, but could do with some more interest. Lets see if we can get some interest for arranging a ride for SE Qld riders in September - that gives enough time for guys to do some planning. Rod, Toowoomba, Mike - a ride out west, perhaps?

Hi David,

Now that sounds like a great plan. Would need to avoid 13/14 Sep as is daughters 16th b'day. I see from previous posts you tend to give sunday mornings a miss, so a Saturday would perhaps be best ??

Would like to try and avoid the more 'common' trips, especially the Mt Glorious run with the boy racers, that is much better left during the week. Out past toowoomba , south to boonah , what ever would be great.

Lets make it happen

May I suggest we start with the 6th of Sept until we can agree on a date

Cheers,

Ride dates:

Here are some dates for planning:

Saturday 6 or Sunday 7 September - suggest that this is a 'partners' (including pillions) ride, and that we involve Rod and Toowoomba (Tryg) and get them to show us some of the Western roads.

Saturday 23rd or Saturday 30th August - one of these days Zea has an all day training session, and when I know the date I am planning a bit of a quicker solo ride - maybe including Lions Head, out to Tenterfield and return, or maybe including Kyogle and Murwillumbah. I'll post more details as soon as I have the date confirmed.

Atlas/Mike - generally Zea and I prefer riding on Saturdays, as we have regular Sunday morning commitments, but we do ride once or twice a month on a Sunday, so Sundays are not completely out of the question.

BTW - for those SE Qld owners who are newer to the site, have a look here for some previous rides and also here and some more here

I also have a 'State of Origin' ride in mind sometime, where we Queenslanders and the Sydneysiders meet halfway for an overnighter. Autumn would be a great time to do it, so we get to see some Autumn leaves, but that is over 6 months away so we may have to do it sooner than that.

Hi David,

All of those dates sound great, the pillion day would be also good, though my wife's back may not be up to it, its a case of deciding on the day, but I have 3 daughters all keen pillions, so I won't be lonely

So as soon as you know what days you can set in concrete, let us know and lets go riding !!1 The SOO would be a great idea, but like you say, lets not wait till autum, spring would also be pleasant, I am sure the New South Welshman would love to come up towards the warmer climate

Cheers,

Atlas

When REAL Australian bikers have a State of Origin ride, they meet at the WA/SA border on the Nullarbor plain. Now that would sort the men from the boys.

Geez Bernie. Thats a big call with so little notice.A number of my Vic and SA BMW buddies are already on their way on the Border Run and a couple of them are coming back on the Connie Sue,I did it a couple of years ago and came back on the Warburton Road.Alas not this year,I'm going to Beatles' Farina Rally and then up to Birdsville-Cordillo Downs-Betoota-Innamincka and then down the Bore Track to Bollards Lagoon and the Corner-Fort Grey and then the Family Hotel at Tibooburra. Wish I could go on the Real Mens ride.
Cheers.

Wow, I hope you're doing that on a dirt bike and not the FJR. ENJOY.

Saturday 30 August is Boys Day Out All we need to do is plan where to meet, and where we go. I'll start a new thread to keep this planning separate from other ideas.

Also, Dorrigo or Bellingen look like good SoO options. Again, I'll start another thread and we'll start some serious planning for an overnighter on Saturday 6 September

Hi David.
Was thinking that the Urunga Hotel maybe better, depending if your going to come down the coast or not if your coming inland well definetly Dorrigo or Bello. Or another suggestion although maybe a bit far down for you -Gingers Creek- on the Oxley. Anyway just stay away from anywhere
where they serve Geritol for you Ulyseeans.
