I wanted to try fatter grips without the hassle of removing the stock grips, fitting others, maybe not being happy etc, etc. After hunting for a rubber/foam 'sleeve' to fit over the grips, I found a wet-suit manufacturer that does many 1-offs for the oddest of requests (apparently). So I ordered 2mm neoprene sleeves the length of the grips - here one is slipped over the brake lever just to take the piccie:
This added 4mm total to the grip size, but I found the cloth-covered neoprene slippery, causing me to grip harder and totally negating the benefit of the fatter grip. So off to the sports shop, and I bought a rubber sleeve that fits a cricket bat handle - the piece on the end of the brake lever in the above picture is the left over piece. I cut suitable lengths of the cricket-bat rubber, and rolled it over the neoprene sleeve, and it does exactly what I want. Excellent non-slip grip, and total grip diameter is 38mm (standard is around 32mm I think):
It probably also has the effect of dampening vibration, but I haven't ever had a vibration issue, so I can't report on that. For info, I went past the shop again and ordered 3mm neoprene sleeves with a plain rubber surface. This is what they look like should I decide to try them sometime (one is 'inside out, one is the way it would be on the grip):
I don't think this plain 'uncovered' rubber would be as long wearing as the version I am using, but it gives the option of having 'grip sleeves' made in 1mm thickness increments, so you could really get just the grip girth that fits your hand best, with or without vibration dampening. |

I'm confused. Wouldn't a bat for a cricket have far too small a diameter for it's grip to slide over the FRJs OEM grips? |

@Bounce - Yes, you are confused. American Crickets don't use bats. Perhaps since neopreme strethces, or try Racketball oriented products. |

Yup, knew that would cause confusion for the 'mericans . Should have said a 'cockroach bat' 'cause we get mighty big cockies out here, far bigger than our crickets. Not that I need to tell you this, but whatever sporting bat/club/racket/racquet/stick/lance/pole with a handle diameter around 35 to 40mm and has a rubber 'roll-on' grip will do. Here we have a wide selection of colours (colors) so you can colour match your grips to your bike, your jacket or whatever, or go the Benetton route have have grips of many colours |
